The physical WAN connection is still active but no internet connection is available.
- 4G backup is not connecting.

 

After physically disabling the WAN port, the 4G backup works.

 

How can separating from Intenet cause it to automatically switch to 4G backup?

I got a beta firmware from tplink, which fixed the problem.
