Model: Deco M5
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I'm considering buying the Deco M5.

However, I work from home occasionally on a secure project, and for security reasons we're not allowed to use network equipment that sends data back to the manufacturer.

I believe the M5 by default does connect back to TP-Link.

My question is - can this functionality be turned off?

Thanks,

vulpi

@vulpi

The data sent won't be back to our TP-Link. And as a manufacturer, we do value the privacy and security, we won't access any private information of you customers, so please be assured about it.

Meanwhile, the Deco will be managed by your own with your TP-Link ID. No one else can access it.

Nice day.

Thanks for your response, @Kevin_Z

I think my employers were concerned with comments like in the following review:

https://www.expertreviews.co.uk/tp-link/1406022/tp-link-deco-m5-review

"On the negative side, the system requires you to connect to the system via TP-Link’s cloud system before you can set it up, which has implications for security and privacy. "

They were concerned that if we send sensitive security data that goes through an M5, TP-Link could have access to such data.

After setting the system up via the cloud system, can we then disconnect from TP-Link's cloud?

Thanks

Regardless of what equipment you decide to use in your home, you will then connect to the internet through your ISP and other organisations who could be using equipment that sends data back to the manufacturer.

If you work on secure projects and your company wants to allow you to work from home, they should invest in VPN technology so that data is encrypted between your computer and their environment.

That way it doesn't matter what equipment you or any third party use, the connection will be secure.

@CW185 , thanks for your feedback, and we know that a VPN would be the best way forward once we get a full solution for that.

For the meantime though, the company are just keen to know the extent of the data sent back to TP-Link via this product  - they're trying to implement working-from-home as soon as possible to pacify some staff members.

@vulpi

First, for more information, you can read the privacy policy via the Deco app.

Meanwhile, cause we use the TP-Link cloud to manage the Deco units, TP-Link ID is necessary and we cannot disconnect TP-Link cloud.

Good day.
