Just to give some advice to everyone...

The built in speed test on the router is a total POS.  You can't turn off QoS on this router BUT you can manually set your internet speed.  This for me ended up being the issue, although I did install the beta firmware that was posted a page or two ago.

Advance > QoS > Application Priority > on the top you can then click an edit button to either automatically obtain or manually enter your internet speed.

Because the speed test was such CRAP that runs on the router, it was showing my downstream as 30mbps on my 1gig connection.  Manually updating my speeds to 1000 down, 40 up, restored my service to appropriate speeds.

With that being said...I still only get about 800mbps through this router, whereas I see 950 all day when directly plugged into my modem.  Hopefully they resolve this, but since the "latest" public firmware is still from 2018 I'm not holding my breath that it's going to get any better.  My ISP allows for link aggregation so I'm going to give that a whirl here once I get another ethernet cable that's long enough to reach from my modem to my router.

Hope this helps someone...

I just installed the new firmware as well.  I have not done a lot of testing, but it seems to be functioning the same.  The best part is that the annoying "Beta" text is gone.

It still did not introduce what I was hoping it would in the ability to connect to VPN clients.  The QoS remains the same as the beta firmware.  It doesn't matter at this point, I ordered the ROG Rapture AX11000 to replace it.  This device really gave me a bad taste for TP-Link router offerings.  I'm not anti TP-Link, I recently bought a USB wifi dongle.  I just have not enjoyed my overall ownership experience of the AC5400x.

@havocwreaker

Good luck to you then. I avoid Asus at all costs (at least when it comes to routers) because of my experiences with the RT-AC86U, which broke down after 12 months of light use. I then bought a ROG AX11000, but one of the 5 GHz bands disappeared for good after just three (!) days. Worse still, Asus firmware - although published more frequently than TP-Link - is as buggy as hell; check the stories at SNB.

So - good luck!
