Model: Archer C2300
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 2.0.3 Build 20180611 Rel. 77668

Hello everyone,

I have an Archer C2300 connected to an NBN Arris CM8200 HFC modem and every ~3.5 days I need to reestablish the connection between the C2300 and the ISP (Superloop).

I have found that simply going to the router's Advanced->Network->IPv4 and pressing Release and then Renew, is enough to get the Internet working again (nothing done to the modem so I think it's unlikely to be the culprit).
That seems like an action the C2300 should be taking by itself when it realises that it has lost Internet access.

With debug logging enabled, a drop and manual reset looks like this:

  • The <public-IP> did not change before/after the release/renew. The remaining IP address is just Superloop's DHCP server.
  • It looks like DHCP requests are being ignored by the server until my C2300 actually needs a new one (or the responses are not logged?)
  • The log message is missing the "to server 122.199.60.1" part when the lease actually needs to be renewed, which is when the failure can occur
  • It sort of looks like the C2300 is letting an unanswered DHCP request hang indefinitely, requiring manual intervention

Any suggestions as to how to investigate (or fix!) this are appreciated,
Thanks!

@Plink

What is the led status of the C2300 when the connection drops? Please login to the web UI at that time and show us a screenshot of the status page.

In the meantime, with computer connected to the modem directly, can you get internet?

If so, please connect it back to the C2300 and clone the MAC address. Otherwise, the troubleshooting need to be done on the modem.

Besides, please ensure that the firmware is up to date, and try to change the DNS server and the address lease time.

Good day.

Hi @Kevin_Z ,

I just had another drop after 79 hours. The behaviour shown in the log matches the log in the first post.

When the C2300 can not reach the Internet the Internet LED changes from white to orange.

Here are the status page screen shots, they show that the C2300 is aware that it can't reach the Internet

In the meantime, the C2300 can access the Internet fine.

All I did to fix it this time was disconnect the Ethernet cable betweem the C2300 and the modem for a few seconds until the Internet LED changed from orange to off, then reconnected it. This logged:

My ISP does not discriminate between MAC addresses; the C2300 WAN NIC is the only one they have ever seen.
The lights on the actual modem indicate full connectivity the whole time.
The problem seems to be the C2300 missing a response to its DHCP renew request and not retrying/not automatically issuing a DHCP discover once its lease has expired.

The firmware 180611 is the latest available.
The DNS servers should be irrelevant, when the Internet is down I can't ping an IP address, no DNS required.
The Internet Dynamic IP lease time is set by the ISP.

Thank you Kevin_Z, I hope you have a good day too.

@Plink

Thanks for your clarification.

Through the log attached, we found that the router failed to renew the IP address which may causes the current issue.

You can try to disable the homecare to give it a go.

Note: We need install the below firmware to disable the homecare.

Any updates, please let us know.

Hi @Kevin_Z,

Great, that's what I thought too.

I have updated the router to your 2.0.2 Build 20181127 Rel. 81125 beta firmware.

Regarding Homecare, I already had the parental controls and Trend Micro features disabled in the 2.0.3 release firmware.
I have now disabled the QoS device priority rules, but that was also available in the old firmware.
What exactly does the new firmware you posted allow me to disable that I couldn't already? Or is it just a build without those features compiled in?

I will see how it goes for over the next four days.

Thanks for your time Kevin!

@Archer-s

Well it didn't brick it, so that's something yes
It will still be a few more days until I can say whether or not it has fixed my WAN drop-outs.

I will report back with results when I have them.

@Kevin_Z

Is that the US firmware version of Beta?

Do you have the EU firmware beta version?

Since i got NO help from tp link support e-mail or live chat about my issue with Archer C2300.

@Kevin_Z

Hi Kevin,

Even running the new firmware, supposedly without HomeCare, the connection still fails after three and a half days (after 1005 successful DHCP renewals).

I don't see any change in behaviour via the logs; a DHCP request is sent but the "Receiving DHCP ACK from server [...]" and "Obtaining Dynamic IP <public-IP> succeeded" log steps are not reached. Looks like it just needs to timeout and retry.

Do you have any other ideas on how to get the Archer C2300 to maintain a stable dynamic IP Ethernet WAN connection?

Dear all,

I have similar issues with C2300 as well. The ISP offered a 300 seconds lease to the router. According to DHCP renewal process, the router issue a renew request at 0.5 lease time, then 0.75 lease time, then 0.875 lease time until it gets an acknowlegdgement from the DHCP server. It seems to me the C2300 ignore the renew acknowledgement several times before it accept the renewal acknowledgement from the server, and then update the DHCP lease accordingly.

I replaced the C2300 with a DD-WRT router, and the WAN status show me that the DHCP lease time increase to 5 minutes (300 seconds) everytime the lease time count down to 2 minutes 30 seconds (150 seconds). I beleive the DHCP server of ISP was working according to the DHCP protocol but firmware of C2300 may have some issues with the renewal acknowledgement. In addition, the DHCP client just hung up after it lose the DHCP lease, instead of trying to initiate the DHCP conversation with a DISCOVER boardcast. It is believed that this implementation of DHCP protocol is the cause of WAN disconnection from time to time.

Regards.
