WDS unstable

I've got a Archer VR400 connected to my ADSL and an Archer C7 in another room in WDS mode. And the WDS connection is very good - 70Mbps - but slightly unstable. Once or twice a day it drops out and I have to reboot the C7 to get back on. This interupts my work and is disporporationately annoying.
I had the same problem when using a different modem connected to the ADSL; I bought the VR400 because I assumed that two devices from the same manufacturer would work together. But they don't.
Where should I start debugging this?
The signal strength is 31dB which should be good
and when it's working throughput is, as I said, 70Mbps. So I don't think it's the signal. Though I notice that everyone else is on Channel 36 too so I'll change that.
2. If I could move the C7 closer to the main router I would, but I am using it because I have devices that need to be plugged into its ethernet ports.
3. Archer C7 firmware is up to date as far as I can tell
Oh ok there's a newer one - Archer C7(EU)_V2_180305 will try that.
4. If I could run an ethernet cable between the routers I wouldn't need an Archer C7 at all, I'd just use a switch.
I've a log of the outages and the spacing between them makes me think it's routing information timing out (or similar) and not an external cause. But I will try changing the channel and updating the firmware.
