How to use the adaptors without the PC utility

Hi all, i was wondering, how do we use the adapters without the PC utility? After pairing my 2 units i cannot get internet access until i install the utility on the disc and enter the password on the local adaptor, i thought this was optional?
Also why does the utility only show the local adapter and not the one connected to the router?
