Poor signal even at short distance

The router is failing to provide workable signal to laptop/mobile in a neighbouring rooms within a 3 rooms flat.
The problem is there since I've purchased this last month. I'm on a 512 kbps plan, cabled/ADSL, with dynamic ip/PPoE
Signal is more than 2 bars only if laptop/mobile is within 2-5 meters distance from antenna without any obstacles.
But signal falls drastically to 0-2 bars if the laptop/mobile is across the wall or more than 5 meters away, even for a single connection!
I have been unsuccessful in connecting to the voice help centre!
Can someone please help?
