Hi,

So I have just brought a 3 pack Deco M4. One is placed next to my Virgin Hub 4 router, as the main deco router.

The second is placed in a wi fi deadspot, and a final one in the attic.

The deco has performed great and there are no more deadspots in the house.

I just have a question regarding speeds. My virgin hub gets me speeds of up to 350 mbps in the attic. The main deco also gets these speeds. However the deco in the attic is managing 200.

Nothing to complain about but I just want to know why the speed has been reduced. Should I remove the Deco in the attic if i'm already getting excellent speeds from downstairs? I have the 3rd unit to plug in my computer and gaming console via ethernet.

Hey

In short this is pretty much what I would expect to be the speeds for that device, ill try to explain

WiFi is whats known as Half Duplex communication, by that it means only one person can talk at one time over the "airspace" so its basically 50%, sadly thats just how this works in reality.

The downfall occurs when you have multiple nodes as you do in the Deco.  Each node only gets 50% of the last nodes "speed".    So the main Deco you have is Model M5, its rated for 866 mbps speeds, these are always like car MPG.. you never get that in real worlds.   The M5 is based on WiFi5 so on average is around 450/500 mbps speeds in reality, anything connected to it should get that speed.

The one in the attic, being half of that again.. ~225 / 250 speeds would be expected if signal is strong.  If you are getting 200.. its roughly in the are.  The reason for this, half duplex.. its cant talk to the phone connected to it at the same time as talking to the main deco, therefore each gets 50%

The only way to overcome this, faster deco.   WiFi6 deco (the X range) have speeds over 1000 mbps, therefore half of that is still much more than your internet.   But as with all things, more speed more ££

Hopefully that makes sense!   smiley

Sorry should also mention that the Virgin Hub may well be WiFi6.. so the speeds will be faster at weaker strengths (the increased distance) and thats likely the reason for the speed differences you seeing

Also.. if you are using deco, its best practice to disable the WiFi on the Virgin so it wont interfere on the same airspace!

Hi!

Thank you very much for both of your replies. I have removed the deco from the attic so now I have only 2 units. One main and one for the deadspot. I am getting better speeds at an avg of 250-300 mbps in the attic now so your explanation helped!

Regarding the Virgin hub, I do not have a seperate modem as Virgin have built the modem into the hub itself and my router is connected via Coax cable from the walls. So I have to use an ethernet connection from my Virgin hub the main Deco unit as the Deco doesn't have coax inputs. I can put the Virgin hub in Modem mode, however I've read on a forum that the speeds will be greatly reduced to my deco units. I've not tested this yet. Also the router is specified to be WiFi 5.

I called Virgin yesterday and they upped by speeds to what they claim is gigabit internet. I received a max of 830 mbps when I connected my Laptop via wired connection to the Virgin Hub. But I understand that a wireless connection can't reach those type of speeds.

Thanks

Nabeel

Going to Modem only mode is generally not an issue, personally I do it on all customers that have virgin media as the hub is netoriously unreliable and modem mode seems to help!

However its personal choice, if you dont want to switch then thats no issue either way, however I would still recommend disabling the broadcasting of the SSID from the hub.   To do this just log into the hub and turn off / disable WiFi.   Less WiFi in the air will give you better speeds

In relation to getting 1gbps over WiFi.. it is possible.. but its ££ as it requires the newer Deco models starting with X (x60 for example).  The newer X range support WiFi6 which is considerably faster and can give over 1gbps provided the device connected also supports that.

However.. in reality do you need the full speed via WiFi?   I havent gone to WiFi6 myself yet as I dont really see the need for it on Laptops, Phones etc.  Anything wired in can get the full speed if I really need.
