Any chance someone else could have known or guessed the original password, then got in and changed it?
I am afraid, there are really just two things you can do in this situation.
Either get hold of the password that is currently set on the router or reset the complete router to factory settings by pressing and holding the reset button on the back of the router for > 5 seconds (until there is some distinctive response from the router's LEDs). After the router has been factory-reset it will ask you to set a new password, just like when the router was brand new.
