Model: Archer C7
Hardware Version: V5
Firmware Version: 1.2.1

Performance of the router seemed OK until it lost power a few days ago. Now I get really bad wifi performance, like 5 mbs download and 0 mbs upload. I did a factory reset and set it to access point node, as it is not my primary router. I found the wifi performance on the device with which I performed the configuration was good, 40mbs/30mbs. Using a tablet I got 100 mbs/30mbs, but the third device continued to have poor performance. I guess that the first device got got performance because it was first. The tablet got good performance because it used the 5 GHz band. The third device was unusable.

There is no problem with any of the devices because the all work well with a wifi extender I have, and there is no problem with reception as they all report 5 bars. The problem seems to be that the router supports only one device at 2.4 Ghz.

I tried to update the firmware on the router but it was already on the latest build.

Hello, the first device and third device are both connected via 2.4GHz WiFi, right? Actually the Archer C7 allows multiple 2.4GHz wireless clients, but usually 2.4GHz WiFi might have too much interference, please try to change the 2.4GHz WiFi channel and channel width on the Archer C7 to see if the performance will be better.

You could change them on Advanced->Wireless->Wireless Settings->2.4GHz page.

In addition, for the bad performance issue on third device, please try to disconnect the first device, the test if the third device will have better speed, if not, please check the wireless link speed on the third device when it is connected to the Archer C7 WiFi: How to check the associated/link speed on a wireless client

By the way, you mentioned that all the clients are working fine with your extender, may I know if the extender is dual-band extender with 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi as well? and is it connected to Archer C7 wirelessly? or connected to your primary router directly?

Please test the extender 2.4GHz WiFi as well on the same client device.

  @baddamper  Thank you, Sunshine.

The wifi extender is single band and connects wirelessly to the primary router. It thinks its bandwidth is 300 mbs <chuckle>.

I have a PC and a laptop, both running Windows 7, so I assume they both connect on the 2.4 GHz band.

As regards the PC, the bandwidth for both extender and TP Link router ("the router") is 150mbs. With the router, the download/upload speeds are 1.7/8.7 mbs. With the extender they are 7/8 mbs, though my wife is watching TV using the extender, otherwise the rate would be much higher.

As regards the laptop, both extender and router connect at 72 mbs. The download/upload speeds are: router: 27/26 mbs, extender 8/11 mbs. Yesterday I configured the router with the laptop and it sure looks as if it's been recognised and given more bandwidth.

There is another device connected to the router, my solar inverter, and there is not much I can do about that. I forgot about it yesterday. One would hope that it is only sending once every 5 minutes.

In order to show 'Advanced' settings, I have to set the router back to 'router' (though I believe it should be set to 'access point'). But I can see nowhere in the 'Wireless Settings' to change the channel. The blue text items are: Enable Wireless Radio, and Sharing Network. I can change Security, Version, Encryption, Password and Transmit Power.

(I assume my tablet, which operated at 100 mbs download through the router, was using the 5 GHz band as it is quite new.)
