Model: ER7206 (TL-ER7206)
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.3.0 Build 20230322 Rel.70951

Router has a  strange behavior prior to switching on or off a POE switch:

If the switch is started before the router, DHCP server will NOT adress IP's to the clients to the switch.

If the switch is started after the router ( with it's  led system flashing green), DHCP server will adresss IP's to the switch.

How is this possible?

Hello @FredGermain,

Because the router is the DHCP Server, if you don't power it on, it won't work and assign the IP address to your switch's clients.

Or did you have another DHCP Server in your network?

I fact if the switch is turned on before the router and if then i wait for the initialization of the router , dhcp of the router is not assigning ip to the client of the switch.

I the switch is turned on after the router has initialized then it is ok.

The router is connected thru wan port to another router.

The DHCP server will not assign an IP address if it is not asked to do so. The DHCP server does not advertise its services, either. There is no provision for that in the DHCP protocol. A DHCP client needs to send a request for an IP address itself. If there is no DHCP server on the network, requests for DHCP addresses remain unanswered. Therefore, the client devices either use their default IP addresses or so-called link-local IP addresses. Some devices periodically resend their DHCP requests so they can obtain IP addresses once the DHCP server is available, but some don’t. Google “DHCP DORA” for details on DHCP.
