Wifi is connected but I cannot use internet

I moved into this apartment 6 weeks ago and have been given a range extender by tp - not sure the model. I can connect to the wifi and can send messages and WhatsApp but it refuses to let me use the internet. It will not let me go to Google or anything. I reset the router and changed the primary and secondary dns. What can I do to fix this problem? About to pull my hair from my head this is so frustrating!

Hi,
Are you using the range extender to extend the wireless signal of your own wireless router?
Or is that range extender connected to the house owners wireless network, given to you to provide you with an Internet connection and then you have your own router connected to it?
By the way, products made by TP-Link normally have a label on the backside with model description and other information printed on it.

@woozle I just have the wifi extender that is connected to the landlords internet, his property is directly above me. I don't have a router

Is that "range extender" connected to the landlord's Internet via a network cable or wirelessly?

@woozle it is connected wirelessly

Ok. So, do you know the wireless password the range extender uses to connect to the landlord's wireless network?
If yes, then can you get proper Internet when you connect your phone or computer directly to the landlord's wireless network? I mean without using the range extender.

@woozle yes i have been using his wifi outside his courtyard for the last six weeks. I know his password. This wifi extender successfully connects to my phone and computer - the wifi symbol pop up- but I cannot use internet when I try. When I go to Google on my phone or laptop it will not connect.

If the Internet works fine via the landlord's wireless network, then the range extender's network should provide Internet too.
Normally there aren't any special tricks necessary to make these range extenders work.
Is the signal the range extender receives from the landlords wireless network sufficiently strong?
If other devices (e.g. phone, computer) have problems connecting to the landlords Wi-Fi from inside your apartment, then if the range extender was also located within your apartment it would face the same issue.
By the way, if the casing of the range extender is already missing its original label, then the model name and hardware version of the device can also be looked up in the "firmware update" menu of its configuration webpage.
If it's one of TP-Link's newer range extender models, then its configuration webpage should also indicate whether itself senses an Internet connection or not.

@woozle it gets a strong single, I just cannot connect to the internet or use it beyond WhatsApp and iMessage. The TP link page says it's not connected to the router but I don't know how that is possible considering it says it is. The images show the TP link connecting to my devices but shows an X between the router and my TP link. Do you know what could be causing this then if it should be working?

Can you ask the landlord if he may have blocked this range extender in his router settings back when it was in use by a previous tenant and then he forgot to unblock it?
Software like WhatsApp are known to be able to get through blocked connections, as other users here have noticed before.

@woozle how would one change these settings on the router? It might me an issue with connecting to the main network too but I'm not sure
