I had hoped to create a roaming network with my VX1800V and a new WA3001 in range extender mode and configured with the same SSID and passwords for the extended network.  However, that does not work - the WA3001 appears to cease broadcasting its networks when all have the same SSID and password.

I was advised by an agent that it would work in this configuration before buying the WA3001.  Today another agent advised that it could not work so am sending it back.

I currently have the VX1800V and some ethernet connected Airport Express APs in a roaming network but wanted to replace these old AEs.

If the WA3001 was ethernet connected in AP mode, would a roaming network work using identical SSID and passwords to the networks created by the VX1800V?  If not, what are the options?  The VX1800V is new.

If you're refering to the Easymesh that VX1800v supports then no, WA3001 can't be uset to build a mesh network - its a dedicated AP.

WA3001 creates separate network even if it's with the same SSID and password.

What you can do is to buy an Archer C64/C86 which are AC1200/AC1900 easymesh routers and use them as a satellite device of VX1800v.

Thus you should be able to build an Easymesh and have the seamless roamig within one mesh network.

What was strange in the WA3001 setup is that there is an option/button to adopt the main router WiFi name and password when setting up the WA3001 !

It must be the design of the WA3001 as I have not problems with the VX1800v when using Apple AE as APs in bridge mode.

Is "mesh" just a commercial name for a network sharing the same SSID and passwords, or it it a proprietary protocol?

Thanks for the suggested devices but I don't see them on the Australian website, any suggestions (sorry, I tell a lie, the C64 is on Amazon.au)?.  Are there any devices that are using the ax standard and with PoE?

Mesh network is more than just setting the same SSID and password on a couple of devices.

Easymesh utilizes the 802.11k/v roaming protocol for seamless roaming experience.

Talking about Easymesh here you can read more details about it and check the supported devices.

thanks I was just doing some reading but would have taken me some time to get your straightforward info 👍

I don't see Easymesh mentioned in the specs for VX1800v.

there is small print....

* The EasyMesh is still developing and will be supported in subsequent software updates.

** Archer VX1800v only support working mode as main router and does not support OneMesh™.

 

My unit is running this firmware - is it now Easymesh compatible?

Thanks again 🙏 Is there a reason to set up a mesh network using either a range extender vs a router?. What characteristics should I be concerned about?


How does a 605x work differently to an AX20?  Both are Easymesh specified 

 

My house has no ceiling space to run cables (but they can be run around the building perimeter, but not as easy) and all internal walls are brick - it is a challenge to get to some rooms. The VX1800x covers half the house and easily penetrates 1 wall but the signal drops a lot through 2. I can run a 40m Cat6 cable to a far room and install an ethernet router/extender there, or I can place a unit midway and connect it via WIFI only. Not sure what is best.

I would use AX20 v3 unit placed a midway, connected via WIFI.

It would have better wireless coverage than the RE650X.
