Model: TL-PA7010 KIT
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version:

Good day all. I hope I can get some assistance.

In our house, we have a games room that has new electrical wiring (4 dual outlets) on a seperate breaker. There is nothing else plugged into any outlet except our router.

We have purchased 2 x TL-PA7017P KITS and installed the 4 devices. Device 1 is connected to our router, we connected a laptop to device 2 and a Qnap server to device 3.

All lights are on accordingly. When we execute a 1GB video file download from the Nas server, the speed was noticbly slow. We ran speed test to the Interweb from the laptop and our DL speed was averaging 80mb. Out internet service provides 1GB syncronous to the building. If we connect the laptop directly to a port on the router, our DL speed from the interweb was around 815mb - which is about right.

Re-connect the laptop to Device 2 and the speed dropped down to around 85-90mb. We connected the laptop to device 4 and achieved around 90-101mb. Thinking something wrong with the outlet, we swapped out several devices with the same general results.

We've download the PowerLineUtility (tPLC utility), updated the firmware to the latest version on all 4 devices, reconfigured the devices for Internet use (rather than the default setting).

The utility indicates a connection speed of around 210mb to all devices - not even close to what I would expect. I was expecting somewhere around 500-600mb, which is quite acceptible and within the realm of reality.

Ran our test again with the same abissmal results.

We got a competitive product with the same specs from out reseller on spec and are getting about 531mb.

We want to stay with TP-Link as this is our "Go To" product line.

I have to beleive it's not our laptops, nas server or router.

Question:

What are doing wrong or is this the best we can expect which would cause us to rethink our product line.

Thanks in advance,

  @Goomba

Hi, thanks for your posting question in our community.

According to your detailed troubleshooting, the actual speed is slow, because the powerline rate is a little slow.

If you're experiencing low speed issues when connected to a TP-Link powerline device, there are several potential factors and troubleshooting steps you can take:

    1. Check powerline adapters' placement: Ensure that the powerline adapters are plugged directly into a wall outlet and not into power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords.

    2. Test different electrical outlets and move them into the same room for comparison.

    3. Check powerline rates between the powerline devices via tpPLC utility/App, you could refer to this FAQ to understand the difference between powerline rate and actual internet speed: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2928/

If the powerline rate is too low, refer to this FAQ to see if it will be better: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/409/

Thanks for this. As mentioned in my OP, I did all of this. We replaced the TP-link devices with the same result. Again; Separate Break (20Amp), nothing else on the line (4 dual plugs). We had our electrician re-visit the wiring - it is all 100% 5by5. We have great success with a competitor's product and have decided that we will move away from TP-link product line and will no longer recommend these products to our clients as well. Thanks...
