Good morning. This is my first participation in this community. I hope to soon be able to collaborate and not just consult. It is about the following (I hope I can explain myself well, since I am new to these things). The device model is TD-W8901G. I indicate it here because in the model option, the model in question does not appear.

I have a fiber optic internet connection. The team is on the second floor and I spend all day on the first floor. To wire my laptop, I use a network cable.  The wi-fi signal is good, but not throughout the ground floor, so I would like to have a repeater. I have had this equipment, the one I mentioned recently, for many years, and without use.

This was the first thing I did:

  1. Plugged in TP-Link
  2. I connected the network cable that gives you access to the internet.
  3. I disconnected from Wi-Fi on my laptop
  4. Connect with a common network cable, the laptop with the TP-Link using one of the 3 free ports, since the 4th. It is being used by the network cable that comes from the second floor.
  5. My laptop has internet access again.
  6. I check, with my cell phone, if there is a new Wi-Fi signal, and indeed there is, but at this point, I have no idea what the password was.
  7. I tried to connect to TP-Link via the web, but obviously I couldn't because 192.168.1.1 takes me to the equipment I have on the second floor.
  8. I disconnected the network cable that comes from the second floor and only my laptop was connected to the TP-Link, and of course, without internet access.
  9. I tried 192.168.1.1 and nothing happened.
  10. Reset the TP-Link, waiting for all the lights to come back on and all that.
  11. I tried 1l 192.168.1.1 again and now this appears.

However, if I connect the network cable from the second floor, I have internet access again.

I hope I have explained myself well. I hope you can give me the necessary guidance. I send you an affectionate greeting from Lima, Peru.

  @MariaClaudia

Clear the browser cach or use a private tab in your browser or use another browser for configuring TD-W8901G.

Don't connect the TP-Link router to your main router while configuring the device - connect only your PC.

The defualt IP address after reset should be 192.168.1.1 and the username/password should be admin/admin.

If you want to configure TD-W8901G as an access point connected to your main router use this guide (Case 2).

I would recommend to set a LAN IP address 192.168.1.254 for the TD-W8901G and then connect to your main router.

If this was helpful click once on the arrow pointing upward. If this solves your issue, click once the star to mark it as a "Recommended Solution".

  @MariaClaudia

Thank you very much for your prompt response. I tell you, this is what I did:

  1. I disconnected my laptop from my Wi-Fi connection
  2. I unplugged the network cable from my laptop
  3. I turned on the TP-Link and connected a normal network cable to my laptop and another to one of the 4 ports of the TP-Link
  4. I opened an incognito window in my browser (Brave)
  5. I entered the address 192.168.1.1, and at first it told me that the site could not load.
  6. On the third attempt, a small window appears to log in, BUT I enter admin/admin and nothing happens. I tried admin/1234 admin/1111 and nothing.

At least there was progress, but I can't access TP-Link via the web. My interest is to convert it into a repeater. What can I do now?

Thanks for the support. A cordial greeting from Lima, Peru.

  @MariaClaudia

I already managed to enter TP-Link. I found some information that I share:

  1. Take the serial number of the equipment, which has 12 characters, between numbers and capital letters.
  2. Group them into 3 groups of 4 characters
  3. In each group, take the last two characters and place them at the beginning.
  4. Use the result, without spaces, as a password.

Without changing anything on the TP-Link panel, I connected the network cable that comes from the second floor, and I had access to the internet on my laptop (connected by network cable to the TP-Link), and when I checked my cell phone, I found the new signal. I entered using the password that the control panel showed, but it told me that it does not have access to the Internet. I guess it has to do with the fact that both computers have the same IP. Now we have to know how to configure the TP-Link to turn it into a repeater. I'm happy.

  @MariaClaudia

I already got it. Thank you very much for the support. One last question. I have configured the Wi-Fi with WPA2-PSK encryption and AES encryption, which is the same as what my router on the second floor has. Since this TP-Link is old, I have a final question: What should I configure, enable or disable to increase security as much as possible?

WPA2-PSK (AES) would be fine. Configure nothing more on this device - it's a simple AP now and that's enough.
