Model: Deco X20
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: 1.2.1 Build 20240723 Rel. 64983

The main question is: why do my Deco X20 devices lose their internet connection after restarting the ISP modem, despite the "Smart DHCP" option being disabled?

My home network consists of one modem from my internet service provider and two Deco X20 units connected to the modem with an Ethernet cable each of them and operating in Access Point mode.

A year ago, when I first set up the network, I noticed that after restarting the ISP modem (e.g. after a power outage), the Deco devices would not connect to the internet again - even though everything seemed fine on the modem (I even tested this by turning on modem WiFi and connecting to the modem - internet was there). Then I read that I had to disable the "Smart DHCP" option, which I did, and everything worked as it should.

Until a certain moment, when suddenly a few months ago the problem returned... I thought I had accidentally enabled the Smart DHCP option, but it was still disabled. Unfortunately, it now looks like this: every time when the ISP modem restarts, I have to repeat the entire procedure of restarting the entire network so that Deco provides internet, i.e.: I turn off Deco, turn off the modem, turn on the modem, turn on Deco and only then do I have internet.

I thought it was because of the lack of Deco updates, because until yesterday I had 1.0.6 Build 20220909 Rel. 59388, but today I updated to the latest 1.2.1 Build 20240723 Rel. 64983 and the problem did not go away. I also checked again: I have the "Smart DHCP" option disabled, and despite this, when I restart the ISP modem, the signal does not return and I have to restart the entire network.

What should I do? Unfortunately, I have no idea how to deal with this problem. I would attach a log that I recorded from the moment when I turned off the modem to recreate the problem, but this forum apparently doesn't allow me to upload log.

Hi, welcome to our community.

It is suggested to update Deco app to latest from Google Play or Apple Store.

Then please check Firmware Update and  try to update Deco again.

If the problem remains, may I confirm some information to understand your sitaution better?

1. What is your exact network topology? If your ISP modem is a modem router, did you set it as pure modem/bridge mode or modem router mode?

2.If you reboot your ISP modem then Deco network has no internet access, how about LED status on two Decos?

3.Based on step2, please disconnect one Deco from your ISP modem, and connect a wired PC(other other wired devics) to your ISP modem using the same Ethernet cable to check the internet access on your PC.

hi, thanks for reply. I have the latest Deco app version on my mobile phone. Nothing has changed. It shows I have the latest Deco firmware, so do also site http://tplinkdeco.net/:

Regarding your questions:

1. Topology is like this: I have ISP modem-router (but it's set oto modem mode, with wi-fi turned off completely) and I have two Deco X20 devices, each of them is connected via ethernet cable to the ISP modem-router. One Deco is on the 1st floor, second on the second floor.

2. It's red. At first it's blinking red, then it's just red all the time - untill I restart all the network as I've mentioned in first post

3. There is no internet when connected via ethernet to the ISP modem

What to do?

Hi, thanks for your clear update~

According to my understanding, your network topology is not that correct.

If your modem router was set as pure modem mode, the Deco network must work as router mode instead of AP mode. This guide lists their difference for your reference.

And when Deco work as router mode, only one Deco can connect to your modem/modem router and usually we call it main Deco.

For your current network, if you want two decos connect to your ISP modem router, the Deco has to work as AP mode. And your modem should work as router mode instead of pure modem mode. And if you connect a wired client device to the modem, the client can get internet access from modem directly. BTW, usually, there is no need to change settings about DHCP.

About Ethernet Backhaul. we recommend following this guide: General questions about Ethernet Backhaul feature on your Deco
