How to make an Ethernet Connection between two Windows devices

I know almost nothing about this. I want to create a fast and secure Ethernet connection between my Windows 11 laptop and my Windows 10 PC so I can use Acronis True Image to back up one from the other.

Options might include...

- Simple Ethernet cable between the two. I have a USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter on the laptop end and a new 2.5Gbps PCIe card on the other. Do I really need a crossover cable, and will a standard Ethernet cable work?

- TL-SG105 Ethernet Switch. Would this solve the crossover problem, if any? A different switch?

- Although I have no Wifi yet, I could probably afford a Router if it improves security or speed.

I welcome your advice.

Hi, thanks for posting question here.

You may refer to this article to know more. And both crossover cable and standard Ethernet cable should be ok.

If two PCs connected to the same router, wireless or via Ethernet cable, the file backup within the LAN will work between them.

To achieve file backup within the LAN using a switch without a router, both PCs need to be configured with static IP addresses.
