Model: Archer AX73
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I have set OVPN server on the router to access my local network.

Connection is working from Android phone and Linux computer as I want.

But after reboot of the router I can only establish the VPN connection, but do not have any access to my network devices anymore.

I need to have to logon to the router through local network, de-activate the OVPN server and re-activate it.

Until next router reboot I can access my network devices by VPN then.

Is there a solution that OVPN server will keep functionality also after router reboot?

  @egon1971

In your case, the problem may be caused by a change in the WAN IP. It is recommended that you set Address Reservation for the device that needs to be accessed.

Here are some potential solutions to ensure the OpenVPN server remains functional after a reboot:

1. Ensure OpenVPN Service Starts on Boot:

  • Check your router settings to ensure that the OpenVPN service is set to start automatically on boot. This setting is often found in the VPN or service management section of the router's interface.

2. Check Router Firmware:

  • Ensure that your router firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes, bugs affecting VPN functionality can be resolved with a firmware update.

3. Persistent Configuration:

  • Make sure that your OpenVPN configuration is saved correctly. After making any changes, apply and save the settings before rebooting.

4. Use a Custom Script:

  • If your router supports scripting, consider creating a startup script that automatically restarts the OpenVPN service after a reboot. This can often be done by adding a script to the router’s administration interface.

  @Joseph-TP

WAN address is fix set.

TPLink router is connected by LAN cable to Deutsche Telekom Speedport. At Speedport the IP is fix set for the TPLink Router.

To your points:

1. There is no setting to influence VPN start on boot. I would expect once activated VPN service shall restart after reboot automaticaly. Otherwise it's a bug in my eyes.

2. Firmware I always keep up to date.

3. Of course settings are saved before leaving the routers web interface.

4. Router doesn't support scripting, at least not within the "official" gui interface which I can open.

If there are "hided" settings or another way to have more settings please let me know.

Can this router be flashed by DDWRT?

 Hi @egon1971,

Did  set Address Reservation for the client devices that needs to be accessed? Please send here the test result.

  @Joseph-TP

I run my network with fix IP's.

DHCP server is running, but only for guests.

All my own devices I have set with fix IP.

I have tried the VPN server issue again.

Before I had set Router reboot every night and every day I had to restart the VPN server to get access.

Now I have set router reboot every week and restart of the VPN server is needed once a week after the router has rebooted.

Looks for me clearly as bug of router firmware.

All services which has been set and activated shall be restarted after router reboot.

Otherwise the firmware has a problem.

Currently firmware 1.1.0 Build 20240323 rel.70541(4555) is on it, but since one week the router shows 1.1.1 Build 20241031 rel.70279 as potentially update.

Due to the router is located in my holiday house I can only operate by remote access. Firmware update by this way normally I avoid because the high risk I would need to access locally by LAN cable if anything is running wrong. As long the provided update doesn't fix the VPN server problem I would wait until I'm in the house again.

But can you please check if there is a firmware update available which will fix it.

Thanks
