Your printer is connecting to powerline adapter or root router?
Is it a wireless printer?
You'd better provide topology.

Sorry the printer is a canon IP 7250 wireless. the router and printer are in the same room. I have also tried attaching the printer to the router via the USB port but this has not helped.
A message that i keep getting is trying to connect to printer but it never does. the only way i can print is to switch off the power line wifi unit.

Like airprint? I know some TP-LINK devices have beta firmware to solve such a issue. You may contact them to confirm.
