Model: RE200
Hardware Version: V5
Firmware Version:

Hi everyone, I need your help to figure out what’s going on with my setup.

I live in a small apartment (around 70 m²), but it’s an old building with very thick walls. The router is in my roommate’s room, and although the distance to my computer is only about 25-30 meters, the signal is really weak.

To fix this, I bought a TP-Link RE200 extender. In terms of speed, it works fine for regular browsing and streaming.

The issue starts when I try to play online games. At first, I had both 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands enabled, but I noticed a lot of disconnections and instability. To try and fix it, I disabled multi-band, turned off Ultra Speed mode, and set it up so that it connects 2.4GHz from router to extender, and 5GHz from extender to my devices.

Now, the disconnections are gone, but when gaming I experience really bad ping spikes and high latency — which makes playing almost impossible. My roommate, who is directly connected to the main router, does not have this problem at all.

Has anyone faced something similar or found a configuration that improves stability when using this extender? Any tips or solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance :)

Hi@Arkanos03,

Thank you for contacting our community.

First of all, if there are thick walls in your environment, wireless transmission is easily interfered by the walls of the environment.
Given your usage environment, if all your rooms are using the same circuit, you can consider powerline devices. You can refer to What is Powerline?

Or consider wired connections to expand the network, which may be more efficient and stable.
