RE550 BAD AP mode but works fine as Mesh extender

I used the RE550 as an access point for months. I had static IP assiged by router and entered on RE550 interface. DHCP server off on RE550. Router is doing all DHCP on the network. I was getting outage of everything connected via Ethernet - no internet no access to router. Replaced cables and switches until I found it was the RE550. About twice every 24 hours - somethimes a lot more often somethimes a lot less often - there was a network storm that lasts about 10 minutes and then sorts itself out. No access to router via ethernet during the storm. When storm happens you can connect to RE550 and it shows the whole network connected as a client instead of just the clients conneted to it. Might have somehting to do with it using same MAC address for one of the wifi bands and LAN port? It can't tell whats a client and not a client and creates a loop. It only does this randomly for a short time. 95% of the time it works perfectly with only connected clients showing. I swapped it out for the TL-WA3001 AX3000 access point and that works fine all the time with no issues. The RE550 is now running as a Mesh device from the TL-WA3001 for months without any network problems. I don't need a fix as I'm happy how it is now but if anyone has a similar problem this info might help.

Hi@izzaman,
Thank you for your sharing.
Regarding your question, you mentioned that there is a switch in the network topology. I think it may be due to the switch settings.
I will send you a beta firmware via message. If you need, you can try to manually update the firmware for RE550 and then set it as Access Point to confirm whether it can work properly?
Updating firmware can refer to How to upgrade the firmware of my range extender
Of course, if you just want to keep the current settings, we also respect your choice.
Thank you again for sharing your experience. You are welcome to contact us at any time if you have further questions.

Thank you for the reply.
It's only a home network with a simple topology, home WiFi router with 4 LAN ethernet ports and a couple of switches to connect everything. There are no physical network loops.
To add the RE550 where I wanted it I needed to add a network switch. I used an old unmanaged Netgear switch that I already had between the RE550 and the router. When trying to find the fault I replaced some old CAT cables with new CAT8 which did not help so I then purchased a new switch TP-Link SG105-M2 and swapped it out from the Netgear switch. Fast 1ms or less response and no packet loss on ping tests via ethernet to RE550 but the fault still reoccurred randomly. I did find that when the fault occurred the network switch was flashing away and then I could just turn the network switch connected to the RE550 off for 3 seconds and then on again and everything would go back to normal rather than waiting for it to sort itself out. This was the same behaviour with both Netgear and TP-Link network switches. Only when I swapped out the RE550 for the TP-Link TL-WA3001 AP did everything work all of the time.
Sometimes it would be days without noticing any fault (they may have occurred when no one was using an ethernet dependant device) so ideally it needs to be tested for over more than a week to be sure. It was a very odd fault where over 99% of the time it works perfectly, I'm still not sure what the trigger was that made it fault.
I've ended up with a good system using the RE550 as an Easy Mesh range extender working with the TL-WA3001 AP and these cover every the area required with strong signal that my tri band router WiFi was too far from. To be honest with my current setup working well I'd rather not change anything. Hopefully a TP-Link tester can create the issue I had and fix the fault if it's not already fixed in the Beta Firmware.

Hi @izzaman,
Of course, your current topology and network coverage meet your needs, and I am very happy for you. I think your experience is also very meaningful for other users.
In addition, for users who do not have Access Point, it is worth a try to update the beta firmware for RE550.
Finally, thank you for your trust in our products and your efforts and sharing your experience.
Feel free to contact us if you have further questions.
Best regards~
