Model: RE315
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: 1.0.30 Build 230919 Rel.52342n (6985/8575)

Hi,

I'm using the RE315 v1.0 range extender, Ethernet Backhaul'd to my main router which is the Archer BE550 v1.0

Basic functionality seems fine - it can replicate the main 2.4 & 5G WiFi networks

I have the following issues though and I'm interested to know if anyone else using the same range extender is having the same issues:

  • The router can have Guest and IOT networks - when I enable these they're not Easy-mesh'd through and advertised on the range extender.

  • The range extender does not acknowledge any NTP settings - when set with valid time servers, same as those defaults on the main router, it doesn't update the time and just shows 01/01/2023. Also if set manually to the correct time and date, these values are wiped out when rebooting the range extender, and the setting of 'get from internet' is reinstated.

  • If setting the time manually to the correct time and using the 'reboot schedule' feature, the device doesn't reboot when the schedule dictates. Nothing happens, complete ignore. It does retain the schedule settings however after a manual reboot, unlike the time settings.

  • The 'LED status' setting is reverted after a reboot - so if you use this to turn them off, they're back on following a manual reboot.

(For reference when I talk about a reboot I'm talking about the menu item in the management page rather than pulling it out of the power socket.)

I bought this device after returning an RE200 as it didn't have ethernet backhaul. Seems you really have to do your homework before buying TPLink these days...

Appreciate any feedback or suggestions anyone might have. Suspect this is probably a firmware issue but I could do with knowing if my device hardware is at fault and needs returning. Thanks.

Kevin: EasyMesh currently only extends the main network. It doesn't extend the Guest or IoT network. You can check more details about EasyMesh in this FAQ (Q13).

Kevin: This sounds abnormal. I checked with the engineering team, and they provided a beta firmware to help locate/resolve this concern. I will email it to you. Please let me know if it works.

Kevin: As far as I can confirm, RE315 V1 doesn't support Reboot Schedule. Please clarify how you enabled it.

Kevin: This could be the designed behavior. You can try to configure Night Mode instead to specify a time period when LEDs are off. For details on configuring Night Mode, please refer to the User Guide (Page 42).

Hi Kevin_Z, thanks for your reply

Are there any plans to develop the easymesh system to include extra TPLink WiFi networks such as Guest adn IOT?

I will try the beta firmware and feedback in a follow up reply - thank you

Reboot schedule clarity as pictured below:

Re. night mode LEds - this is again dependant on the time settings of the device being correct - see below

I'll come backto you shortly with the results of the firmware testing

Kind regards,

Hi,

The firmware fixes the NTP settings issue - I now have the current time and this setting is retained after rebooting the device yes

With the NTP issue now fixed in the beta firmware are there plans to investigate the LED functionality and power schedule feature?

I can live with the easymesh limitations on the main wifi networks but the device shipped with the above functionality in the firmware and they are features I already use on my main router.

@Himjip

Are you saying the Reboot Schedule and LED status are not taking effect even though the time/NTP issue has been resolved with the provided beta firmware?

Have you tried resetting the RE315 to factory defaults and reconfiguring it to connect to the BE550 via EasyMesh again? Then, check if the Reboot Schedule and LED status work properly.

Correct - the reboot schedule and LED status functions are still the same as before - nothing has changed as part of the NTP settings fix.

I tried your suggestion of factory resetting on the new firmware but the situation is the same. The only thing that works now is the device time settings.

What I've also noticed is that when using the test firmware I have a lot of trouble connecting some devices to the extended network

Amazon Alexa devices never connect, they just time out.

On the old firmware they connect but take a long time.

When connecting directly to the router they connect quickly in the setup process.

  @Himjip @Kevin_Z

Kevin is there any plan to accelerate a fix for these issues? The RE315 is almost worthless to me in this state.

I bought it to provide an ethernet backhauled connection for all my devices and at present it only really works properly with my phone.

IOT devices struggle with the extended network, many of the features it shipped with don't work after a reboot.

If this can't be fixed I need to know so I can return this and get my money refunded.
