Model: RE505X
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

Hello, today I bought the TP-Link RE505X Wi-Fi extender, I did the installation according to the manual.

My internet is  1000 Mbps, normally when I connect to the modem's Wi-Fi, I see a speed close to 800 Mbps, but when I connect to the 5 GHz Wi-Fi of the Wi-Fi extender (RE505X), it gives 250 Mbps speed. There is no problem in the location of the device, it is not far from the modem, normal Wi-Fi is already full there and I get much more speed on normal Wi-Fi.

Is there an extra setting I need to do? The box of the product says 5 GHz 1200 Mbps, I get 250 Mbps :(

I would be very grateful if you can help. Thank you.

Hi@MagnaCartus,

Welcome to our community.

Please refer to the following steps to troubleshoot potential speed issues and improve the speed of your Range Extender.
    1. First of all, we recommend using http://www.speedtest.net to test the speed accurately. Speedtest App/CLI tools (https://www.speedtest.net/apps/) would be better.
    2. Before testing speed, ensure the extender's 2.4GHz and 5GHz SSIDs are different from the router's to ensure your Laptop/Phone is connected to the extender's 5GHz Wi-Fi.
    3. Adjust the location and antennas on the extender for optimal performance. Check this link for detailed guidance: How to place your wireless Range Extender for optimal reception and performance
    4. Connect to the Wi-Fi network of the host Router, and run a speedtest for comparison.

Note: Range Extenders extend WiFi coverage rather than boosting speed. Affected by wireless interferences, extender size, and antenna direction, devices connected via an extender typically experience ‌about 50% slower speeds‌ than a direct connection to the router, as data travels through two wireless hops: Device ⇄ Extender ⇄ Router.

While a Wi-Fi extender can't make your internet speeds faster (and may even, in some cases, slow speeds a bit), it can significantly increase the reach of the signal, helping you gain reliable access throughout your home, workplace, school, and so on.

Best Regards.
