Model: TL-WR802N
Hardware Version: V4
Firmware Version:

Hello,

I used OpenWRT on WR802N v4 (EU) and tried to get back to original stock firmware. I use tftp, set PC to 192.168.0.66, rename the original firmware TL-WR802Nv4_EU_0.9.3_3.33_up_boot[250821-rel39948]_2025-08-21_11.15.50 (extracted the .bin from the ZIP file) to tp_recovery.bin
I see that this file is downloaded to the WR802N, but then the LED just constantly blinks and even no LAN connection is possible.
Device isn't bricked since it gets alive again as soon as I flash openwrt again.

What am I doing wrong? How can I get back to stock firmware? Thank you very much for your help.

Hello @Connectionloss ,

TP-Link routers do not officially support firmware customization or third-party firmware such as OpenWRT or DD-WRT, due to potential compatibility and stability issues. While some users attempt to revert to stock firmware after installing third-party firmware, this process can sometimes fail if the firmware file is not compatible, not properly prepared, or if the router's bootloader has been altered. TP-Link does not guarantee that reverting to stock firmware will always work, and using third-party firmware may void your warranty.

Key Points:
• TP-Link does not provide support or guarantee successful recovery for routers that have been flashed with third-party firmware.
• If the router is not booting after flashing the stock firmware, it may be due to incompatibility or a mismatch in the firmware file.
• Damage or malfunction resulting from third-party firmware use is not covered under TP-Link's warranty.

For more details about our warranty policy, please refer to: Warranty & RMA Policy.

  @Joseph-TP

Can you please just provide me a recovery firmware file, like in case there was a power outage while upgrading? Then the router will be restored fully back to normal. For example the CPE210 firmware files just need to be renamed recovery.bin and then the router will be fully restored. For WR901N you just need to strip a few bytes from the firmware and it is restored back to original.

So please help me with the recovery of the WR801N. I didn't expect that there would be any problems, since WR901N and CPE210 were the same way to recover as OpenWRT was installed. There was no warning at all that when installing OpenWRT you can't go back. So you can argue, that it is indeed TP-Links responsibility to provide a way back, when TP-Link provides a way to install 3rd party firmware.

Here https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/814590 there was also support getting back to stock firmware.

Hello @Connectionloss ,

For the firmware recovery, you might refer to: How to recover the router when it bricked?

Regarding the OpenWRT firmware you mentioned, these are generally provided by enthusiastic non-official users, not our official firmware. Therefore, we cannot guarantee the stability of these firmwares, nor can we provide related solutions.

We understand that you may have chosen to install third-party firmware to improve device performance or functionality. However, installing third-party firmware may introduce instability and even damage the device. These firmwares have not undergone our official testing and certification and may not meet our product security and performance standards. We do not recommend using third-party firmware.
