Can anyone help explain the strange way my deco system is behaving.? I am not that technically adept.

 

I live in a three story house. A deco on each floor. At the top is ny study, the deco unit in question about four feet from the computer, using wifi although I have tried connecting Ethernet directly to it.

 

I find I am getting better speeds, nearly twice as fast if i connect to the Deco unit in the room below rather than the one close by.

 

Can anyone offer and explanation for this?

What you see is expected result. Each WiFi node is intelligent WiFi range extender. WiFi range extenders cut your internet speed in half due to "half-duplex" operation - they can't receive and transmit data simultaneously.

When you connect PC by WiFi to Deco in the room below, you bypass one Deco hop, and that increases speed.

 

With WiFi mesh there is trade between WiFi speed and coverage. WiFi mesh provides better coverage and signal stability, but for the price of WiFi speed reduction. 

 

You should get better speeds on computer if you connect computer to Deco unit by Ethernet.

thank you for your help and illumination.

 

i can't claim to understand mesh at all. All I know is I now get usable WiFi throughout the house. I would say speeds are consistent through except the room in question where I have told the computer to connect to the mesh in the room below rather than the one a few feet away. I get twice the speed that way
