hi everyone, i'm an amateur with limited knowledge about network configuration, trying to build a network on a sailboat.

there will be 2 WAN providers:

primary: 1 4G LTE modem-router (cheaper connection, with higher data plan, accessible while in port and close to the shore)

seccondary: Starlink global (expensive connection, with limited data plan, to be used once vsl is far from shore and mobile antennas).

Then to distribute the service via 2-3 access points (lan wired) for connectivity in most areas of the ship.

So, the plan is to configure a failover (not sure if the best option is to set a ping time, reduced bandwith or what option do you recommend?

And also, would like an "auto-recovery" to the 4G internet provider, once the boat is returning to shore, and picks up signal. This would be crytical to avoid unnecessary use of the starlink once the 4g is back operative.

Do you know if this is possible, and how to configure it?

Thanks!

adding to my previous, found this user manual:

https://manuals. plus/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/1910013241_ER605UN2.0_UG.pdf#zoom=auto&pagemode=none&_wpnonce=8bfc264941

In page 81 and onwards it provides information about link backup/failover.

It describes the WAN providers as primary and backup.

silly question: backup provider means that it turns off automatically after the primary provider is back operative?

If so, this answer my previous question.

Can any expert confirm please?

Hi  @Juanjo66

Thanks for posting in our business forum.

May I ask if you use the TP-LINK Omada access points as well?

If so, you may refer to this link How to Configure Link Backup on Omada Gateway via Omada Controller and it would explain how to setup the WAN link backup/failover and what features you need to enable in Controller mode.

If you just have an ER605 from TP-Link, you can check the mentioned User Guide or the above link as well.
