Model: Deco BE65
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version: 1.2.10 Build 20251229 Rel. 42008

Hello,

Previously, I had for several years a Deco X55 mesh Wifi 6 (3-pack) for home use. Today I made the upgrade to Wifi 7 with a 3-pack antennas of BE65 11000, and using it for a couple of hours I realized about few things i see is not as effective as the older previous model.

First, the network optimization, with the Deco x55 the network optimization was carried out smartly and automatic, these couple of years every time i've manually perform the network optimization it always showed that the network was  100% optimized. Now, with the Deco BE65, since its a new replacement and Im performing several trial, I realized, that every half-hour the network when scanning it shows that the network have interference and need to be optimized. So, evidently the Deco BE65 is not performing and automatic optimizing the selection of the best channel for each band in real time as my previous older Deco x55.

The current access points are installed in the same spot as the previous system was, therefore no new positions/locations are taking place.

Secondly, i have a lot of different types of devices connected to my home network, with my previous Deco X55 mesh i have a very detailed list of all connected devices, Air conditioner, light bulbs, smart vacuum, smart watch, smart tv, media player, video games.. but with my current Deco BE65. i just have like 6 types of devices compared to the really long list (probably more than 30) of devices types you could assign to. each device connected to the network, as i did with my Deco X55.

My system is currently running the latest firmware, so i wonder, how is that high-end system like this, twice as costly, released years after my previous Deco system, is not performing as effective as the older Deco and have less options regarding the different types of device list you could assign. It was really disappointing, now i'm gonna have to be constantly optimizing manually the wireless coverage instead of the automatic optimization performed with the Deco X55.

I have wondered why optimisation is not happening automatically in the background on a regular basis. It could be a good improvement if this could be done. Or on the other hand I have found that there are 3 different TP Link optimisation apps... in the downloadable TP Link "Wi Fi Toolkit", the optimisation inside "Deco Lab" (after you click "More" in the Deco app), and the optimisation found in the Deco app after you click more and scroll down a bit. Each of the 3 usually give different results. The most easily "pleased", or in other words most likely to show "Low Interference" is the Optimisation found in Deco Lab. The one that is almost showing Medium or High interference is the Optimisation found when you scroll down after clicking More in the Deco app. The Optimisation in the Wi Fi Toolkit is imbetween the other two in reporting interference or not.

So I think maybe the need to Optimise is maybe less serious/ important than we might think. For me, I am more likely to know that when my Google Home responses from my speaker is slow and response to sensors like door open sensors triggering smart lights is slow, then my mesh system is probably suffering interference and this is actually more reliable than doing an optimisation scan. Also, if I run a Cloudflare speed test and speeds are slower than usual and the health report of my network is "Poor" instead of Good or Great and there is some percentage "Packet Loss", my network is definitely suffering issues, probably interference.

You can set your Deco units to reboot each day at say 4am and they do an automatic optimisation after the reboot. Its maybe better to do this than having the Deco units, certainly these WiFi 7 technology units doing an auto optimisation every 30 minutes, because when channels are changed after an optimisation, I usually have a few devices that go offline for up to an hour or so as they settle and reconnect with the Deco units... I wouldnt want this happening all day long.

I know neighbours WiFi can change their channels and thus optimisation might need to be done again, but maybe WiFi 7 technology is more robust than older units. I find, with a couple neighbours affecting me, I can usually go a week before issues begin for me... so a weekly automatically set reboot solves my issues.

Good luck with your network!

Hopefully I can help. When you introduce a new Deco into an existing mesh set up, you should add the new deco as a satellite / mesh unit, then within the Deco app, you can then swap out the main Deco, to one of the others in your set-up. So you swap out your current main deco, for the one you just introduced. When done, you unplug the exsiting main unit for the new one; this way ALL your settings, including the renaming of your clients remain. If you added the new Deco from the beginning as the main, and fresh set up, you'll need to manually rename all your clients again.

Secondly, this is a huge one, firmware version 1.2.10 is a total mess. You'll see posts about this within the community. My recommendation is to update to early release version, 1.3.0 release. 11551, while there are a very small bugs, it's much better than the current 3 or 4 versions TP Link has currently floating around within the community.

Here is the link: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/856030?moduleId=39

Reminder, MUST be 1.3.0 Rel. 11551.  There is another 1.3.0 Rel. 4XXX do not use this one as it's a bag of hurt.

Hope the above helps somewhat.

Man, you're a lifesaver! I just installed this pre-release firmware and works like a charm.

With this new firmware I will look after the efficiency of the "IA driven mesh" feature actually works for the automatic optimization of channels.

Also the device list is updated now, there's tons of categories to choose, its so much easier to manage and supervise regarding which devices are connected.

I didn't have any experience with installing pre-release firmware with these mesh system. So about the future, if a new update shows up in the Deco app, should i update the system or should i read first about it first?

Thank you for that insight, i wasn't aware about the different tools deco had for this type of wireless analysis.

I will try scheduling a reboot the system at nights, and monitor the channels.

Thank you!

Regarding your question, for myself, I leave auto update off. You'll receive a prompt when new public firmware is available, having pre-release firmware installed doesn't change this. I normally leave auto update off, check the forum to see if anybody is having any issues prior to deciding on whether to update or not.

I also don't use a scheduled re-boot at all. I think this would cause more problems for you, then good. Try it when left off, and if you believe you need a re-boot then set it up.
