Model: Archer TX20U Plus
Hardware Version:
Firmware Version:

I just bought and installed a new TX20U Plus, but for some reason it can't reach even a remotely usable connection speed. my internet is 700mb, and every other device connected gets to at least 400mb, but this thing can't seem to reach beyond 50mb — it only got to about 30mb out of the box, but after trying almost everything on the FAQ and even on some of the other threads here I managed to get it consistently to around 45mb - 50mb.

things I've already tried:

1 switching USB ports

2 moving it around a bit closer to my router

3 checking the wifi connection on other devices in the same spot

4 updating the driver (currently using 5001.19.113.4)

5 changing the settings to those recommended by mods in the forum (USB set to 3.0, disable roaming sensitivity, etc, whatever all of these mean)

7 resetting the pc and the router multiple times

the adapter is properly plugged into an USB 3.0 port and the connection to the router seems to be fine (5ghz band, wifi 6), so I'm kinda stumped. thanks in advance, any help is appreciated (also, I'm a total tech illiterate so if you're gonna try to help please explain it to me like I'm 10)

Hello @_sanjad ,

Welcome to our community.

It looks like you've already done a lot of troubleshooting; the following steps might help pinpoint the cause more quickly. Please continue with the following steps:

1. Check link speed: Download speed is typically 30-50% of the link speed. Please follow this guide to check the link speed between your adapter and router to determine if the current speed is normal: How to check the associated/link speed on a wireless client

2. Optimize router location: Place the adapter within 10-15 feet (approximately 3-4.5 meters) of the router, remove any obstructions in between, and adjust the router antenna to a 45° angle or perpendicular to the ground.

3. Check router Wi-Fi channel settings: Congested Wi-Fi channels can reduce Wi-Fi speed. Please adjust your router settings to the following recommended configuration:

• 2.4G: Channel 1/6/11, Bandwidth 40MHz

• 5G: Channel 36/40/44/48, Bandwidth 80/160MHz

(For assistance adjusting router settings, please contact your router's technical support.)

4. Confirm that the driver is the latest version: Please visit install the latest driver, Archer TX20U Plus_V1_5001.19.128.1_Win10_Win11[Beta]

Best Regards.

Re:awful connection speed on TX20U Plus
Wednesday
thanks for reaching out. so: 1. my link speed is 1.2gb, which I understand is pretty standard for dualband wifi6 routers. 2. I've moved my PC to a table less than 2 meters away from the router. didn"t do anything. 3. so apparently my router is locked to auto channel selection, I can't manully change it. I'm fairly certain this isn't the problem though, as I never had any problems with my wifi in any other device before. 4. dowloaded this newest driver, nothing changed. I double checked the connection and the port. honestly pretty lost on what to do. while doing repeated speedtests, I noticed that around 1 in 5 tests suddenly spike to a higher, normal download speed (around 420-450mb) but then immediately drop down to less than 50mb again. also noticed some crazy ping spikes while testing (150 to 200ms). very frustrating, am considering a refund.

Hi  @_sanjad ,

Thanks for getting back to us.

The intermittent nature of these speed drops and ping spikes strongly suggests an unstable connection, this sounds rather disheartening.

Based on your description, here are some additional steps to try:

1. Disable your computer's built-in Wi-Fi adapter (if present):
This is crucial as built-in adapters can cause interference with your TP-Link adapter. Go to Device Manager, find any other wireless adapters, right-click and disable them, ensuring only your TP-Link adapter is active.

2. Disable power-saving mode for the adapter:
Power-saving features can cause the exact symptoms you're describing • intermittent drops and performance issues. To disable it:
• Open Device Manager
• Find your TP-Link wireless adapter
• Right-click and select Properties
• Go to the Power Management tab
• Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
• Click OK

In addition, have you tried the beta driver in my last reply? If yes, here is another newer driver that you can try: Archer TX20U Plus_V1_5001.19.128.3

If the new driver doesn't help, we can escalate your case to an engineer if you'd like to continue troubleshooting with us. Of course, we also respect your choice if you ultimately choose to return the product and hope you can find a product suitable for your usage environment.

My PC doesn't have any other adapter (now I really wish it had). Already turned off power saving a while ago, did nothing. Also tried out this new driver, same thing. Yes, I'd like any help I can get, it would be honestly a massive chore to send this thing back and I would be left with no wifi instead of bad wifi. Still, I kinda need this thing working as it wasn't cheap and I got it specifically thinking it would suit my needs. Oh well.
