Model: Archer AXE95
Hardware Version: V6
Firmware Version: 20241203 rel64133

I own two of these routers in two physical locations and they are both configured similarly with the same admin complex password which only I know.

Today I was using the app to configure the local router and it kept booting me off back to the login screen but wouldn't login.  So I had to quit the app and reenter the password multiple times to finish what I was doing.  Eventually it told me the password was not valid and I couldn't log in anymore.  Same from a local web browser.  I tried rebooting the router by turning it off and back on.

I was configuring a block list and never entered the admin menu or messing with firmware updates, which were already up to date.  The router is still functioning but I can't log in anymore.  My other router works fine using the same password and I am able to log into that remotely.

This appears to be a bug in the software.  I suspect it was caused by the app on my Android device.  Normally I use the web browser but in this case I was using the app.

It seems the only solution will be to reset the router.

This is not an error on my part and it is extremely unlikely that I was hacked at the time I was doing this.

Definately some kind of bug in the system.  There are multiple reports of this happenning to people.

Update: I am able to login to the router using my TP-Link ID and password which is different than the local password I was previously using. This is strange because I do have access to the router so I thought it would be straightforward to simply reset the password from the advanced tab of the router interface. But I can't change the password because it requires me to enter the old password even though I'm logged in already, And of course the old password which I know and was using earlier is no longer recognized. This confirms that the local password was somehow changed by the system without my consent. This is a pretty serious bug in the TP-Link software.

The solution I found is that I was able to configure the password recovery feature while logged in under my TP-Link account.

I ended up using a gmail account for the recovery since my outlook email account did not work.  I used Claude AI to work me through the process because the instructions on the TP-Link site were next to useless and did not really explain the process.  Setting up the authentication password in gmail is not a straightforward process if you are not familiar with setting up app passwords.

Interestingly enough a Google search said it was not possible to change a router admin password or set up password recovery using a TP-Link account without the local password for security reasons.  This makes sense but clearly is not the case.  While I was not able to change the router admin password while logged in with the TP-Link user account (because the admin password had been reset and I didn't know what it was), I was able to set the recovery and simply change the password through the recovery page.  I simply reset the password back to what it was.

This is pretty buggy software and it would have been much faster to have simply reset the router and re-enter my preferences but I managed to do all this without disconnecting the internet while my wife was watching TV in the other room.  So there's that.
