Connect TL -PA40 20P to two router ports

This is probably a stupid question, but I have two devices connecter to one powerline adapter in one room. When I connect 1 port from the second adapter to my router it works fine. What I thought was that two devices would require two router ports but when I connect the second port to the router (for the second device) I lose internext connectivity. I though that rather than haveing 2 devices sharing a port, 2 in / 2 out would improve performace over 2 in / 1 out
