RE650 5GHz Band

Hy guys!
I live in Brazil, and acquired a pair of RE650 V1.0 to extend my home network, and my router is an ASUS RT-AC88U. I had it configured to use channel 161 at the 5 GHz band, but the RE650 don't "see" this channels, once they're the EU version. This force me to use the 5 GHz lower channels, that are crowded here. My question is: may I safely update the firmware to US version, once that would allow me set the router to the upper channels? There aren't legal restrictions to these channels here, but I don't know if the hardware of the RE650 from US is different or equal to the EU RE650.
Could somebody help me?
