Hi there,

My TP-Link VR2800 (Hardware version: Archer VR2800 v1 00000000) drops internet connection with connected devices with annoying regularity.

Current connected devices:
Apple TV (wired)
[*]Xbox 360 (wired)
[*]iPhone
[*]iPad mini
[*]Samsung Edge S7
[*]Nintendo Switch
[*]Dell XPS 15 laptop
When web surfing on the laptop, there are periods where DNS/timeout errors are returned in Chrome:

ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT
DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NO_INTERNET

The suggestions I've seen are to reboot the router which does work but it can get these DNS errors every few minutes at times.
- I've checked the logs and the DSL connection is seemingly stable.
- I've set DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

I don't know how to diagnose this any further. Any ideas?

Cheers,

IMD.

Hi,

Do you have IPV6 enabled?

I have a VR2800 with same firmware and do not experience any problem with IPV4.

But... With IPV6 enabled DNS resolution is not working by default, I have to force to Google IPV6 DNS manually in "Advanced","Network", "Internet Settings" configuration page :

This is currious because I can see VR2800 is able to retrieve my ISP's IPV6 DNS, but I cannot join them. Replacing them with Google DNS correct the issue. Maybe related to my ISP's /56 ipv6 prefix.

Well. if you can not open this post. How about trying to disable Bit swap?

Because I don't have any dsl connection problem ;-)The problem is not dsl connection, problem is IPV6 DNS are not reachable if not defined manually on the router. So bitswap will be no help as it is a pure-dsl setting which interfere only on dsl stability/speed.

At that situation, you should call support.

Thank you for your help. Already did two weeks ago, I opened three tickets for three different issues, only got response for one.

Update to issue

Hi folks,

I spoke to TP-Link first and the support dude asked about what speeds I was getting on my Naked-DSL service. I was getting a paltry 2-3.5Mbps. He said that the VR2800 is tuned for speed so there has been cases where the poor connection speed has lead to DNS dropouts.

I then spoke to iinet, jumped through all their support hoops and they agreed 2-3.5 Mbps is very slow. Had a engineer called out, found a fault on the line and that has now been fixed by Telstra. I'm now getting between 10 and 13Mbps. That's the good news.

The DNS dropouts STILL happen.

I'll double check the IPv6 DNS settings but no doubt I'll be on the TP-Link support line again this week and let you know what happens.
