Hi,

I bought a couple of starter packs which resulted in me having 4 of the TL-PA7020P model.

Three of them are working fine but the fourth is exhibiting some strange behaviour and i'm hoping someone here might have some clues as to how to fix it.

Firstly, let me say that right off the bat I had problems getting them to pair using just the pair button. In the end I got it working by firstly upgrading the firmware on each unit and then using the tpPLC utility to add them to the environment. This works fine; please note that the one unit I have a problem with is one that has not yet had it's firmware updated.

The issue I face is that when I connect this particular unit to a socket and power it on it will appear in the tpPLC utility but it shows as 'UNKNOWN' and the only options available are to rename it or to remove it from the network. The name change persists as expected. The removal does remove it from the network but after a short period it reappears in the list.

I have also tried resetting the unit by holding it down for 15 seconds but that doesn't seem to do anything either.

Has anyone got any suggestions on this please?

Thanks

Pete

Just to add an update to this.

The strange thing is that the device does actually work - but you can't view any of the properties or upgrade the firmware on it. The only option available is to rename it.

I know it works because if I hook my laptop up to it with an RJ45 cable then not only does the faulty unit appear in TPPLC, but all of the other 3 powerline adapters on the network are also visible.

Very strange. I have a feeling the simple answer might be to just return the pair for an exchange.

That's pretty common actually. The thing is, TP-Link uses the firmware's Product Name and Unit Name features wrong, putting the product name into the Unit Name field. Hence, when any 3rd party utility changes the Unit Name, the tpPLC utility cannot identify the product anymore.

Do a factory reset on the unit, and it'll be fine again.

Hi,

I only ever used the tpPLC tool.

Also, a reset is, I believe, achieved by holding the Pair button down for 15 seconds? I did that and it did nothing. In fact it didn't seem to matter how long I held it down for nothing happened.

It was odd that the link LED on the unit didn't change either, irrespective of if the cable was connected or not.

I ended up returning the units as faulty and got replacements which seem to be working fine now.
