Archer VR900 - MAcbook Pro Link speed 11Mbps on 2.4Ghz network

Hi - Ive just purchased an Archer VR900 to replace the wifi modem supplied by service providor because I was unahppy with Wifi performance of that model.
The VR900, my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) only gets a link speed of 11Mbps on the 2.4 GHZ network. If I switch to the 5Ghz network I get a link speed of 1300Mbps. As a result, I get sub-par performance on the 2.4ghz network. I want to use the 2.4ghz network for the additional range it provides.

Ive tried a factory reset of the router and setting it up again. Ive tried Pram Reset on the macbook pro.
When Im connected to the old router, the link speed on the 2.4 ghz network is 144Mbps
So any ideas why oin the new TP link router, my link speed is limited to 11Mbps?
