WR841N as Range Extender has no internet access
WR841N as Range Extender has no internet access
2019-06-12 00:54:23
Model: TL-WR841N
Hardware Version: V13
Firmware Version: 0.9.1 4.16 v0001.0 Build 180119 Rel.65243n

My set up is as follows:

Main Router: Archer C7 AC1750
Hardware: v4
Firmware: 1.0.7 Build 20180425 rel.62587(4555)

Range Extender: TL-WR841N
Hardware: v13 (not listed above)
Firmware: 1.0.7 Build 20180425 rel.62587(4555)

Problem: devices connected to the Range Extender have full access to the LAN, but no access to the WAN. This applies to both wireless and wired devices.

Using Diagnostics under System Tools confirms the TL-WR841N Extender has access to local network, but not to the internet.

The Range Extender WiFi SSID is the same as the Main Router WiFi SSID, but this is not a WiFi problem as it applies to connected devices as well.

Any advice is gratefully received.

Hi,

Below is the instruction to enable the WDS function on the 841N.

https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/227/

With device connected to  the 841N and C7, please check the IP address and gateway obtained by your device separately.

Note: How to get them: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/838/

After that, please show me the pictures to do a comparison analysis.

Good day.

Hi Kevin_Z

Thanks for this. I've checked all the 841N settings, and all seems to be OK (your link points to a faq regarding the green UI - my 841N UI is different to that illustrated).

Sorry, but I don't understand your second bit about the IP address and gateway. The device currently physically connected to the 841N is an IP CCTV camera, and as such is not practical to connect directly to the C7. Hence the need for the range extender in the first place. The problem is the camera needs internet access to send email alerts, and this is what I am unable to do. If I have misunderstood your IP / gateway info request, please could you explain again?

Phil

Hi,

The reason why I ask the IP and gateway obtained by the device with it connected to the 841N and C7 is to verify whether the two routers have built up connection successfully cause you said there is still no internet.

You can connect a computer to the 2 routers and check the IP/gateway obtained.  https://www.tp-link.com/usupport/faq/838/

Meanwhile, may I know next to the 841N, with your device connected to the wifi network of C7, can you get internet?

Good day.

Hi

OK, I've used a mobile device (iPad) with the following results:

Connected to C7 (main router):

IP address: 192.168.0.129

Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 185.93.3.168, 212.71.249.225

Connected to 841N (Range extender):

IP address: 192.168.0.182

Gateway: 192.168.0.1

DNS: 192.168.1.1

So it appears the problem might be the DNS settings. I therefore have tried changing the 841N DNS setting from 192.168.0.1 to match those of the main router (185.93.3.168, 212.71.249.22). This makes no difference and the DNS reported is still 192.168.1.1, but obviously with DHCP disabled on the 841N this is probably tio be expected?

Needless to say, this change has not changed the fact that the 841N cannot ping anything outside of the LAN.

Thanks.

Hi,

Could you please clarify the setup procedures step by step?

In short, you need change the IP address to 192.168.0.x, x cannot be 1 anymore, and you need disable the DHCP server.

Meanwhile, have you setup different wifi names for the 2 routers?

Please try to ping the internet IP address of the C7 with device connected to the 841N and show us a picture.

Thanks in advance, and have a nice day.

Hi

The step by step setup was exactly as below. Please note my 841N UI is not the old green UI but the newer UI with the new TP-Link logo.

1) Settings > Network > LAN

Set IP address as 192.168.0.3 (C7 IP address is 192.168.0.1)

2) Wireless > Connect to Network

Click on Scan button

Select the relevant AP (confirmed by the MAC address of the C7)

Enter the wireless password applicable to the C7

3) Wireless > Extended Network

Extended 2.4GHz SSID - click on the Copy Host SSID button

Extended 2.4GHz Security - as pre-populated by the above action (the same as the C7 settings)

Extended 2.4GHz Password - as pre-populated by the above action (the same as the C7 settings)

4) DHCP > DHCP Settings

Disable DHCP Server

5) System Tools > Reboot

So to answer your question regarding wifi names - they are both the same as pre-populated in Step 3. This is also my preferred option.

The 841N can ping the LAN IP address (192.168.0.1) of the C7, but cannot ping the WAN IP address (192.168.1.107) of the C7. The Internet Connection Type of the C7 is set to Dynamic IP.

Please see attached screenshot of the latter as requested.
