Model: TD-W8980
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: v0.6.0 1.8 v000e Build 150514 Rel. 40138n

Hi,

NOTE: I could select TD-W8980 in the forum form Model dropdown, so I picked a similar number instead. My router is a TD-W8980.

I have just switched from broadband to fibre. My trusty TD-W8980 doesn't support VDSL so I'm using my ISPs router, which has poor WiFi range. So I've put the TD-W8980 into 'Wireless Router Mode' and am using it between my ISP router and my Hub. I am finding that the Bandwidth Control functionality no longer seems to be working. Is this functionality available when the router isn't bringing up the xDSL connection? If so please can you share some configuration details with me. I've tried both DHCP relay and continuing to use the TD-W8980 as the DHCP server. I'm not sure what else to try.

Cheers,

Mark

@marky1124

Hi Mark, thank you to remind us that the TD-W8980(end of life) does not exist in the drop-down list, we have added it.

For the bandwidth control function, it shoule work in wireless router mode also.

Below is the instruction to set it up: https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/2176/

Note: The VI is a little different, while the steps are the same.

You can give it a go first and if it does not work, please let me know.

@Kevin_Z Thank you. I see that step 5 mentions it controls the throughput through the WAN port. I've had to take the TD-W8980 out of my network for now as I had problems with my Amazon Echo and wanted to take out any unnecessary complications. I will try again when the household is quiet. I think this might be what I need to do:-

RJ11 DSL cable into Plusnet Hub One. Ethernet cable from Plusnet Hub One LAN port to TD-W8980 WAN/LAN4 port. Use TD-W8980 for household WiFi and connect my network switch to one of it's LAN ports. Then I'll try some heavy downloads and check the bandwidth control is working. I'm thinking the I'll use the TD-W8980 to be a DHCP server on the usual 192.168.1.0 network and use a static gateway address to the Plusnet on it's own 192.168.2.0 network. If this works nicely then I'll also be able to setup a Guest WiFi on the Plusnet which would be nice.

Well it seems clear in my head. I'll see what happens when my plans meet reality.

Thanks again,

Cheers,

Mark
