Router restarts itself when starting VPN connection through it.
Router restarts itself when starting VPN connection through it.
My router Archer C2300 restarts itself when starting VPN connection tunnel through it.
My settings:
NBN --- Archer VR1600v --- lan cable --- Archer C2300 (AP mode) --- wifi --- PC
The only thing chat support came out with was reset the router. So following chat id : 15972434
I did reset of my Archer C2300 router, set the basic settings for wifi, and turned it into access point mode. Then I connected again with my Windows 10 PC, and all was working great, including internet connection. Then I tested again Windows default VPN connection (which works no problem via my second router Archer VR1600v). And again it crashed the Archer C2300 router. Router restarted, but the VPN connection stopped on verifying sign in info and eventually timed out.
If I do the same via wifi Archer VR1600v with the same VPN connection into my work office, it works without any issue. The problem is as the Archer VR1600v is on the other side of the house the connection is slow and unstable. Hense Archer C2300 as access point.
I have spent ridiculous time on this already, anyone with some good advice really apreciated, thank you in advance!

Hello, apologies for the super late reply.
If the C2300 router restarts when you try to connect to the PPTP VPN server, please try to install the below beta firmware and confirm:
Archer C2300 EU v1: https://static.tp-link.com/beta/2021/202101/20210104/c2300v1_eu-up-2.0.2_Build_20190211_Rel.2997_sign_2019-02-11_13.55.17.zip
Archer C2300 US v1: https://static.tp-link.com/2020/202005/20200518/C2300-US-PPTP-issue.zip
Refer to this guide to install the beta firmware manually:

I hope this helps.

@miro_miro I just found out this similar issue (or even same) was reported here: https://community.tp-link.com/en/home/forum/topic/168374 without any reasonable solution to it.

Another important observation. VPN tunnel through Archer C2300 works without issue when using 2.4 GHz. So it is failing only with 5GHz WiFi. I wish somebody would tell me this before I spent hours on this. Especially when I spent hours with 'chat support' mostly waiting on reply like restart your router, reset your router kind of nonsense. I am ok to go only via 2.4 GHz if tp-link is not able to fix this fail by updating firmware. Not ideal, but it will do for me.

I have the same issue here, C2300 reboots either on 2.4 or 5ghz wifi whenever I try to connect to my work vpn. The vpn is just using a standard MACOS vpn.
H/W Version: Archer C2300 v2.0
F/W Version: 1.0.4 Build 20200211 rel.67420(4555)
Very annoying as loving the rest of the features.

Thanks @Kevin_Z is the beta firmware suitable for the 2300 V2 version? Currently I am running the firmware version below:
Edit: Regardless the firmware upgrade fails on the C2300 V2.0 version.

Thanks for getting back. Is your Archer C2300 v2 a US version or an EU version? Was there any error message when the firmware update failed? Kindly show us the screenshot.

Hi again @Kevin_Z the router is the EU version. Attached is the screen shot with the error message.
I don't see any related messages in the system log.

Sorry, my fault. As far as we can confirm, we only receive similar feedback on C2300 v1, C2300 v2 should work without an issue when connecting to the VPN, so we only provide the beta firmware for C2300 v1, you cannot update the firmware for v1 on the v2.
As for the issue you are experiencing, can you please confirm again? May I have your detailed network diagram/layout? How is the C2300 connected to the network?
When you tried to connect to the work VPN and the C2300 restarts, can we have the detailed restart phenomenon? Does it work fine without connecting to the VPN?

I have same router and same problem! It's not normal for router to have problem like this and no official firmware update. I will never buy TP-Link router again. Also have problem with IP and MAC Bindind. Every time when router is restarted I should click on Bound again. Router for these moneys it's working like a trash! TP-LINK, please sell us working product, not crap! This is from BETA firmware. I should look at these BETA on my entire screen.
