Hi everyone I am hoping someone can help me, I am quite tech savvy but new to the world of bridging and router set ups and this is my first purchases of TP Link products.

 

To get straight into it: I have purchased a C5400X router and a TD-W9970 modem (to bridge) to replace my ISP modem/router, but my problem is when I have this all set up I am experiencing low pings (between 13-30) but they fluctuate between these variables constantly every second, and this is causing Latency Variation issues in my gaming.  For example in Rocket League my pings go from 24 to 37 to 26 to 29 to 32 etc etc each and every second (this happens in all games).  This isnt just seen on gaming, I run via cmd ping -t google.com these results are similar there or any other website.

 

If I remove this set up and just go back to my ISP provided modem/router my ping stays at a lower 11 to all websites, and always stays at 11 with the rare occasion it might hit 12 (it is stable).  In Rocket League, my ping there will always stay at 18 and is faultless and I have zero latency. 

 

So now if i stop using that and just use the TD-W9970 and connect to that as a modem/router by itself, my pings were fluctuating again badly, so I coppied all the details from my older modem to this new one and changed the PPP Echo to 6 and my pings were fixed.  This is where my issue comes in.

 

Putting my TD-W9970 back into bridge mode, and connect my C5400X up, looking through all the settings on the router, I cannot for the life of me find where I can change the PPP Echo setting on the C5400X and I fear without this, my desired set up will not work.  Can anyone point me in the right direction here please, hopefully im missing something really simple.

 

Some extra details:

Im on PPPoE VDSL

VLAN 101

When I have the ping issues, I still have full speeds and 0 packet loss

Pinging to my C5400X it is always 1ms

I have my pc set as priority

I removed all other connected devices and the issue remained, it isnt bandwidth saturation.

@Kevin_Z It turns out the more I tested the more I realised the problems couldnt be with my devices.  In the end it seems the issue was my actual internet, after days of fighting my ISP for an Openreach Engineer to look into it they finally caved in and sent someone to look at it on Sunday.  It turns out there was a Split Pair Issue which was causing interference.  Even after endless tests with switching hardware around, I was getting various results just because of this, but half the time it made it look like it was a hardware issue.

 

I now have my full bridge set up into my AC5400X and everything is running smoothly and im very happy with my TP-Link devices.  Sorry for wasting your time and thanks again for trying to help! :)

Hi, as you found out, there is no such PPP Echo setting on the C5400X. BTW, may I know where did you set this PPP Echo on the W9970? Can I have the screenshot? You may cover some credentials in the web interface of your W9970 for any security concerns.

 

What if you leave the W9970 as a modem router, and configure the C5400X as an access point, will that help? You may refer to the below link to change it to AP mode:

So I have reset my network once more and used the TD-W9970 as a router/modem on factory settings to find this setting.  It seems I didnt test enough last night as when using the factory automated settings my pings as stable.  I have tested this for 2 hours and its remained stable at 10ms ping constantly.  The setting I was on about was called Echo Request Interval which was called PPP Echo on my older Asus modem/router (I guessed these were the same thing as the number variances matched).  I thought that was what was the fix but it turns out it wasn't, as on the default 30 my internet was perfectly stable and fine.  So i apologise for that miss information.

 

After 2 hours of having this stable, maxing out my bandwidth and seeing nothing but a solid 11ms ping, I decided to try the C5400X router once more.  I factory reset the TD-W9970 again, put it into bridge mode, VLAN 101 again and connected everything up.  The C5400X instantly connects to the internet via this, but once more my pings are unstable and have remained so for an hour.

Again, without the router being used, both my TD-W9970 and older modem router shows time=10ms constantly.  Ultimately I wouldnt want to use the the C5400X as an access point due to me needing the port forwards, I wouldnt want to be behind double NAT.  I could always test it to see if the pings are resolved doing this, at least it could help narrow down the issue.

Whilst typing this out I thought i'd click around in the router settings. I decided to turn off the Antivirus and Firewall whilst my ping tests were running, once all these were turned off my results immediately became this:

Turning the protection back on didnt seem to hinder the pings again.  It still has the odd ping fluctuation which I dont get without thethe C5400X but it appreas for now the pings are generally far better then they were.  I will leave this a few days and comment back here with any results good or bad. Could this had been a software issue within the the C5400X? :)

Hello, thanks very much for all the detailed tests you have performed, really appreciate that.

 

Currently, we cannot tell if it is or it's not a firmware issue on the C5400X, as you find out previously that the ping tests were also unstable days ago, we may assume there might be a line fluctuation when using this W9970.
