I went with 2-pack M9 Plus. 

My house is two storey, about 1,800 sq. ft., plus finished basement with small home office and small workshop.

My ISP provides me with 300Mbit download/20Mbit upload Internet.

I run my Deco in AP mode.

My Main Deco is right in the middle of the first floor, wired to ISP router/modem.

My Satellite Deco is wall mounted on second floor between bedrooms, right above Main Deco from first floor. Very strong 5GHz signal between them, separate channel for backhaul is utilized fully.

Both first and second floor got so good WiFi coverage, I disabled 2.4GHz band in Deco Main network. I am getting full 300Mbit download speed on a device connected to Main Deco, and from any of bedrooms on devices connected to Satellite Deco, on 5Ghz.

I have found that 5GHz signal is getting weak at the corner of my office in the basement, so got myself M5 and wired it there. Just in case someone calls me on my smartphone VoIP while I am there.

I plan my mesh for 5 years horizon.

I expect that in the next five years I won't be needing devices that run exclusively on WiFi 6, and from those I need (smartphones, tablets) I expect to still find those compatible with WiFi 5, even in 2025.

I do not expect to increase my ISP Internet speed above 500Mbit in the next 5 years, which means M9 will handle it just fine. 

My WiFi network utilization is not heavy. For home network I follow the principle "anything that is not movable and can be wired should be wired." My file server, backup server, network printer, desktops, two smart TVs - all wired with the Ethernet. To enjoy 4K on YouTube and Netflix without buffering and interruptions, no matter what I do with my WiFi network.

WiFi is left for tablets, smartphones, IoT. Have around 10 WiFi devices now using Deco mesh, and don't expect to have more than 20 of those in the long run, and even those additions will be low bandwith IoT devices.

Because of that M5/M9 form factor can handle my home network workload. Deco devices get a bit warm, but not hot. They are properly placed to have good air flow around them.

All in all - I am very happy with Deco mesh. It is consumer grade system, but I don't need more. 

Great, Thanks for sharing those details.to be honest with you. I have verizon fios 200/200, thinking about upgrading to 400/400 soon and I currently owned M9 (3) & M5 (1) systems at the moment. First I owned the M5, signal and performance wise is super good but turned out I never got above 100 mbps download with 4x M5 with distance 15 - 17 ft away from the deco unit.

So I upgraded all 3x M5 units with 3x M9 units now. The structure of our house built and used many aluminum beans and hsa high ceiling, most of time 5ghz won't get to our bedroom from the main unit 1st level. 

Right now I need to upgrade the wifi for my mom and dad's house. I am planning to move those x3 M9 units to their house and replace them with 3x X60 (wifi-6). The reason I kinda debate is because right now they offer blackfriday sale for M9 ~ $199 and X60 $230, likely $10 more per unit for the X60, but i have to go down side from Tri-band M9 to Dual Band X60. I don't know how much performance I will gain or lose by replacing it, also I concern about mixing between Wifi 6 (X60) with Wifi-5 (M9) node/units, not sure if hardware and firmware will work like the ads or apps ?

2nd Level Living Rm = 1x M9 Main unit.

3rd Level = bedrooms located 3rd flr right now using 5ghz of Living or Kitchen units.

What do you think about my set up.

I would suggest not to mix different generations of Deco devices in one mesh: WiFi 5 M-series and WiFi 6 X-series. It is my personal opinion, of course. 

I like M9 for dedicated 5GHz backhaul, but you might get by without it, having X60. 400 Mbit Internet speed is way less than maximum X60 performance specs, so dedicated backhaul might not be necessary.

I would suggest you try 3-pack X60 for your house. Use them to replace all M-series Decos you have: three M9 and one M5. Perhaps, one of X60s in the house can provide acceptable level of WiFi signal to your garage, and if not - wait till single unit X20 is on sale, buy it to add as Unit 4 in garage. That will repeat your M9/M5 setup but with X60/X20.

If X60s won't work for you, it means M9/M5 is as good Decos as you can get for your house. Can't expect anything different any time soon from TP-Link, and when X90 is released (rumored to have dedicated backhaul just like M9) assume it'll be quite expensive unit.

In case you find X60s you bought are not for you, you can move them to your parents' house and restore your house M9/M5 mesh. You might be unlucky to have both houses not optimal for Deco X60s mesh, but chances are X60s will work there and you won't need anything else for your parents.

Worst case, and I repeat that so often I may as well make it my email signature, get 3-pack X60s with good return policy so that you can return them back if necessary.

I've been using 1 set M9 (3-pack) since 07/2019 & 1 set X60 (3-pack) since 11/2020.

X60 has weaker wireless connection between nodes compare to M9. Can understand because M9 tri band vs. X60 dual band. X60 work best with ethernet backhaul, wish I read dongknows review sooner. Maybe a firmware for X60 wireless backhaul improvement

X90/X5700 is the only upgrade option for M9 users.
