Model: Archer VR600v
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 0.7.0 0.9.1 v0075.0 Build 200616 Rel.36749n

Hi,

I bought an Archer VR600v a couple of weeks ago. I have to admit that the first impression was very good: easy to configure and set up. But very soon the problems started.

I have a Raspberry Pi inside my local network with an static IP connected per cable acting as DNS server + smart-home server. All the devices I have at home use the Raspberry Pi as DNS. I have been using this configuration for years with my old router (Easybox). But with this new TPLink Archer VR600V the connection between hosts is completely unstable and sometimes the devices cannot comunicate between each other. Of course, all the devices have a private IP in the same network (192.168.1.X/255.255.255.0).

If this happened always I would consider I have done something wrong in the configuration. But it happens only from time to time, for a few minutes. And then everything starts working fine again. Sometimes I have to restart the router to solve the problem. It has happened too when trying to configure a Google Chromecast. My Android was unable to find it until the router was restarted.

Is it a hardware problem? As I have read a lot of bad comments... is this the expected quality from a TP product?

Thanks,

Daniel

@DMP1985

May I know who is your ISP? Is the VR600v working as a modem router with a PPPoE connection?

Are there any other wireless routers or extenders in the network? If possible, show us the detailed network layout, thanks.

How did you configure the Raspberry Pi to act as the local DNS server + smart-home server? Can we also have some screenshots?

When the local hosts cannot communicate with each other, are they still getting a valid IP address from the VR600v, can you ping each other? How about the internet access at that time, are you still able to access the internet?

@Kevin_Z

Thanks for you answer.

Regarding your questions:

1) My ISP is Vodafone Deutschland.

2) No other wireless routers or extenders are in the network.

3) The Raspberry is running a Bind9 + Apache2 + HomeAssistant server. Screenshots about what would you need?

4) When the localhosts lost connection between each other they still have a valid IP and can ping to external IPs (I use ping 8.8.8.8 to test if a host has internet connectivity). But they cannot ping to internal IPs. It is like the router's ARP blocks their messages, or don't know how to route them internally.

@DMP1985

An example:

Ping to google's DNS -> OK
C:\Users\user>ping 8.8.8.8

Ping wird ausgeführt für 8.8.8.8 mit 32 Bytes Daten:
Antwort von 8.8.8.8: Bytes=32 Zeit=17ms TTL=117
Antwort von 8.8.8.8: Bytes=32 Zeit=19ms TTL=117

Ping-Statistik für 8.8.8.8:
    Pakete: Gesendet = 2, Empfangen = 2, Verloren = 0
    (0% Verlust),
Ca. Zeitangaben in Millisek.:
    Minimum = 17ms, Maximum = 19ms, Mittelwert = 18ms

Ping to an internal device (Raspberry Pi) -> NOK
C:\Users\user>ping 192.168.2.10

Ping wird ausgeführt für 192.168.2.10 mit 32 Bytes Daten:
Zeitüberschreitung der Anforderung.

Ping-Statistik für 192.168.2.10:
    Pakete: Gesendet = 1, Empfangen = 0, Verloren = 1
    (100% Verlust),

Ping to an internal device (Router) -> OK

C:\Users\user>ping 192.168.2.1

Ping wird ausgeführt für 192.168.2.1 mit 32 Bytes Daten:
Antwort von 192.168.2.1: Bytes=32 Zeit=21ms TTL=64
Antwort von 192.168.2.1: Bytes=32 Zeit=1ms TTL=64

Ping-Statistik für 192.168.2.1:
    Pakete: Gesendet = 2, Empfangen = 2, Verloren = 0
    (0% Verlust),
Ca. Zeitangaben in Millisek.:
    Minimum = 1ms, Maximum = 21ms, Mittelwert = 11ms

A few seconds later, connection to the internal devices works again without problems

C:\Users\user>ping 192.168.2.10

Ping wird ausgeführt für 192.168.2.10 mit 32 Bytes Daten:
Antwort von 192.168.2.10: Bytes=32 Zeit=16ms TTL=64
Antwort von 192.168.2.10: Bytes=32 Zeit=8ms TTL=64

Ping-Statistik für 192.168.2.10:
    Pakete: Gesendet = 2, Empfangen = 2, Verloren = 0
    (0% Verlust),
Ca. Zeitangaben in Millisek.:
    Minimum = 8ms, Maximum = 16ms, Mittelwert = 12ms

Thank you very much for all the detailed info. Can we have the model number of the old Easybox? Is it possible to compare the settings on the Easybox and the VR600v?

@Kevin_Z

It was an easybox 904 XDSL (more than 5 years old).

The settings are exactly the same (network, gateway, mask, etc.).
