UE300 3.0 Gigabit - slow internet
Hi,
I have a problem with my UE300 adapter. I've been trying to solve it for a couple of weeks but nothing helped. I have a 1Gbps fiber connection but the download speed of the adapter connection is never faster than 100Mbps. I've checked the cable and the connection on another laptop and the speed was over 900Mbps so everything was correct. The adapter is connected to the USB 3.0 and the model of my laptop is Asus F551M. I know it's an old laptop but i think the USB speed should be higher. I've talked with the Asus company and they told me i should talk with you guys. I've also bought the UE330 adapter and the situation is the same. When i connect the adapter to the laptop the connection speed that is showned is 1Gbps. If you need any more information please let me know. I must admit you are my last help.
Best Regards
Conor

Hey
I am familiar with this specific model of laptop, as you say it's showing its age now but perfectly serviceable! However, they do have one flaw and that is the USB3 controller.
You will likely notice that the USB3 connector on the side of the laptop is black and not blue, this is basically as it's not fully USB3 standard. it's a SuperSpeed USB2 port so isn't USB3 speeds.
We see this issue a lot in work, SS ports were a temporary interim solution until usb3 was mainstream, sadly they are not USB3 and therefore are not full speed. Better than USB2 granted, but not USB3
Sadly SS USB ports are around 480mbps, so it gives speeds around the 100mbps cable connection.
Hopefully, that helps!

Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I was getting worried that no one is going to answer my post. Now to the usb port matter. My USB 3.0 port connector is in color blue and has the ss logo next to it, so i think i've got the right port. I would be grateful if you reply to me with any other solutions to my problem.

Can you post some screenshots of the speeds and the status of the network card? anything you can post will help and I will take a look for you
How are you testing the speeds?

Please let me know if you need any more screenshots. I've tested the speeds on several pages and the test result of one of them you can see on the screenshot (it's one of the best speed testing page right here in Poland). Generally all the speed testing pages are showing the same.

Hey Conor
Would you mind trying the USB adaptor in a USB2 port and repeat the test? be curious if you get the same result.
Should also say test this with no USB devices connected to the ports, that does slow it down

When i connect the adapter to the usb 2 port it doesn't work. It shows that there is no internet connection. When i unplug the usb devices the test result is the same.

The UE330 uses a realtek 8153 chipset and driver, looking at your screenshots you are on a slightly older driver (10.43 vs 10.45)
I don't see this being a big issue, but certainly worth a try! The link below for updated driver if you want to give that a go. Do you have aces to another device, friend / work etc that you could test this on? It just seems strange that both the 300 and 330 are topping out around 120mbps, which is what I would roughly expect from a USB2 port.

When i was trying to solve the problem myself i also thought the usb could be the problem. I've checked the drivers of the usb and they show intel usb 3.0 driver. Is there any other way to check what kind of usb port i've got or what's the speed? (i've updated the driver as you wrote and nothing changed)

Sadly there isnt really, the next best option is to get a USB3 stick that can write pretty fast and see how it works on your USB3 port.
Ideally if you had another PC / Laptop to try this on and compare is the best option
