I am inserting an 8817 between my Netgear D6300 wireless router and my incoming line so that I can connect or disconnect the router without upsetting the internet connection. I have the 8817 connected to the internet and can access internet through a direct connection between my pc and the 8817. However, I am stumped as to what to do next. Do I need to select "Bridge Mode". Any pointers regarding the config of the 8817 (and/or the Netgear) gratefully received.:)

No, you needn't.

ADSL line-----------TD-8817----------Netgear D6300

Since you can access internet through a direct connection between pc and the 8817, I think 8817 is configured to PPPOA mode, right?
8817 is a modem router. To hook up Netgear D6300 to 8817, you can set Netgear D6300 to obtain an IP address from 8817 automatically on the WAN side.
And since the default LAN IP of 8817 is 192.168.1.1, you need to check the LAN IP address on Netgear D6300 and make sure there are not IP conflicts between them. For example, if the LAN IP of Netgear D6300 is 192.168.1.X(1~254), you need to change it to 192.168X (2~254).1.

All sounds too easy!! No need for port forwarding or all that other tricky stuff? Do I connect to the WAN port or a gigabit port on the Netgear?

No, no need for port forwarding or all that other tricky stuff. And you need to connect TD-8817 to the WAN port of the Netgear router by an Ethernet cable.:)

Success - at least partial.

This mode has completely bypassed my Netgear so I have lost all my assigned/fixed IP addresses and other Router services. Is there a way that I can keep the Netgear Router "as-is" but still isolate it from the Internet with the 8817?

You're welcome.
And sorry that I am not quite familiar with the Netgear router. Since TD-8817 is configured to PPPoA, it is running as a router. Normally, when you connect the Netgear router to TD-8817, the Netgear router can be also running as a router and still keep its router functions. In your case, you may contact with Netgear technical support and ask them to help you check the settings on the Netgear router.

Great post! But being a novice, I still need a little nudge! Which mode do I need to use the TP-Link as a modem to inteface the Netgear router whilst keeping all of the Netgear router's functionality and allowing the router to be powered down/restarted without affecting the DSL connection? I am assuming I would use the "Gateway" option but don't have the confidence to experiment! Cheers

I suggest you to use the case #2 in order to don't modify the main current setting of the TP-Link.
The Netgear setting is a little bit more complex because you have to use another network segment but then you can access/control each router separately.
Note that in this case, for your PC's the main router is the Netgear, and for the Netgear the router is the TP-Link...
