Forum Community - I recently purchased a WR802N to use with my Mac Powerbook Pro (running Catalina 10.15.7) so I could bypass the captive portal in hotels and use my Chromecast. I tried it out recently but was unable to get it to work. I tried following some (non-forum) instructions that, honestly, were not clear. They mentioned using WISP and connecting the ethernet cable to the computer. The printed instructions that came with the device always refer to entering the password for the public wi-fi and that does not work with a captive portal. Also - most hotels no longer have physical ethernet connections; only wifi.

My assumption was that I would be able to log-in on the computer and share internet over ethernet to the router. I tried WISP and Router modes but could never get access to the internet on the TP-Link network.

My main question is - what mode should I be using (WISP, Router or Access Point - or something else) and if there are any special "points" to consider. This is my first attempt at using a travel router to do this (just getting back into traveling from pandemic restrictions) so I am probably missing something.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!!

Hello, are you able to access the internet when you connect your Mac Powerbook Pro (running Catalina 10.15.7) directly to that captive portal wifi? Do you need to do any setup on the Mac Powerbook Pro?

As far as I know, some public Wi-Fi or portal networks may require users to pass the portal authentication before surfing the internet, there should be no issue connecting to the internet when adding a wireless router to it as long as the authentication popup window shows up.

You may try to refer to the below instructions to configure the WR802N as the Share Hotspot mode:
https://www.tp-link.com/support/faq/1325/

However, if the captive portal wireless network requires another login username and password, this WR802N may not be compatible with that kind of wireless, which may have special requirements or limitations.

@Kevin_Z

Yes - connecting with the Mac or iPhone has never been a problem. The issue is during set-up where the router is asking for the public wifi password (which does not exist). I have tried both "travel" modes.

My computer automatically logs-in at many hotels because I have several rewards programs. I may try to disconnect it and do the set-up during log-in so "maybe" the router will "remember" the connection. I don't have another trip for a couple weeks so I will try that (and any other suggestions) then.

Of course many hotels also provide their own, proprietary remotes that don't allow for the input source to be changed so even if i get the router running it may be for naught ;-) .

Thanks!!

Understand it. If the hotel wireless signal is open, then you can choose Key Type as None, then check if it will connect. Please let me know if it works when you have a trip next time.
