TL-WR902AC won't connect to Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G wifi hotspot 5GHz

Model: TL-WR902AC
Hardware Version: V3
Firmware Version: TL-WR902AC(EU)_V3_191018

I put the modem into shared hotspot mode and was able to connect to my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G when the Samsung had the wifi hotspot turned on with 5GHz preferred or 2.4 GHZ preferred set.

But when I try to connect the TL-WR902AC to my Samsung phone using 5GHz it fails to see the Samsung in the AP list. I've changed every setting on the Samsung phone and tried to connect using 5GHZ but no luck.

As soon as I change back to connecting the TL-WR902AC using 2.4GHZ the connection to the Samsung wifi hotspot works.

It says that this device should be able to do 5GHZ but it does not?

I would appreciate clear guidance on how to make this work.

@MarkAGregory

Hi,

The TL-WR902AC does support 5 GHz, but not necessarily the channel or band that your S21 Ultra's hotspot is transmitting on.

Does the S21 Ultra's hotspot configuration menu allow selection of a specific channel? If yes, then set it to channel 36.

Apart from that, do you have another device with dual-band Wi-Fi (e.g. phone, tablet, PC) on which you can run a Wi-Fi Scanner software to determine on which channel the S21 Ultra's hotspot is transmitting?

@woozle thank you for the reply. It appears that the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G does not have the capability to change the hotspot channel. I was able to connect the TL-WR902AC to an upstream access point that was set to channel 36 and this permitted LAN devices to connect to the TL-WR902AC using 5G wifi.

It is a great device, however it is limited in capability and if it was updated to use all channels (and WiFi6) this device could be a best of category - the idea is very useful for a range of scenarios. I'm using the 2.4 GHz and happy to have the device.
