Model: Deco P9
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: 2.14.10

Hello - I have searched the forum, but unable to see a resolution.

Setup

  • Using a  Virgin Hitron router (300 mpbs package) and using Deco P9.
  • The router has been changed to a modem setting.
  • Connected one P9 unit to the router (via cable)
  • I have installed three additional satellite P9 units around the house.  Two of the units (downstairs) are operating in wifi mode.  The third unit is connected upstairs via a cat 6 cable.
  • Removed any speed restrictions in the Deco app.  Both download and upload limits have been set to 1000 mpbs

Issue

  • When doing a speed test in the room where the router is situated, the speeds I am getting are around 300+.  I am on the 300mpbs package with Virgin
  • When doing a speed test in the room upstairs, the speed I am getting is around 70 - 100 mpbs.  This is where the satellite unit is connected via a cat 6 cable.
  • Where the other satellite units are operating in wifi mode, I am getting speeds of around 50 - 70 mbps.

Question

  • In regard to the speeds in the room upstairs, that has has the hard wired satellite connection, why are speeds so low.  Should the speeds be much higher?
  • Not sure if the cable is a an issue.?
  • Is it possible to get better speed in the upstairs room?

Thanks in advance

If you connect Main Deco to Satellite Deco with Ethernet cable, you should have same WiFi speeds on both Main adn Satellite Deco. Unless, for some reason, Satellite Deco can't use Ethernet cable. Because it is P9, Satellite might switch to powerline or use WiFi, and it is harder to troubleshoot than with Deco hardware is not powerline capable.

To start with basics. You said "The third unit is connected upstairs via a cat 6 cable." Where another side of that cable connected to: Hitron router or Main Deco?

Also, for that third unit, check what does it say under Signal Source and share its screenshot here. You can find that information in Deco app, under Satellite Deco information page. I don't have example for P9, but this is how it looks for M5:

That may help to figure how your Satellite Deco is actually connected, through Ethernet or not.

  @Alexandre.

Thanks for you reply

The unit upstairs is connected via cable to the port extender.  The port extender is linked to the main DECO unit downstairs.  Main DECO unit is connected to Hitron.

I did notice the Ethernet cable was not fully engaged with the DECO unit.  Once fully inserted, I rebooted both DECO and Hitron.  I am now getting full speeds upstairs.

Appreciate your reply
