TP-Link RE 450 (EU) Extender bought two days back Not Detecting the 5GHz band with Nokia GPON Router G-2425G-A & Detects Only 2.4 GHz While My Laptop & Mobile Detects Both bands At the Same Place Where RE 450 EU Is Located

Hi,

W.r.t above subject, I tried the chatting option of Technical Support but it doesn’t bring any human to interact with me and gives useless options not matching the above-mentioned case.

The GPON G-2425G-A router supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and my Dell E3450 laptop and Vivo V2142 mobile detects both bands at the almost same location (in fact 10 feet away from the main GPON Router and RE 450 which is 10 feet closer to the router and about 30 feet from the router while the laptop and mobile are about 40 feet away from the Nokia GPON G-2425G-A router).

I cannot change the channel to 36-48 or anything else on GPON as Auto is selected and shaded and cannot be altered.

* When my Dell E3450 laptop and Vivo V2142 detects both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands (sometimes I face packet drop and disconnection issue and thus bought TP-Link RE 450 EU at almost the same location then why doesn’t RE 450 EU detect 5 GHz when it is closer to the GPON G-2425G-A router?

I have to return the TPLink RE 450 (EU) to Flipkart in four days if the extender AC1750 doesn't meet my purpose of purchase and thus want you to tell me its solution at the earliest.

I tried both the methods to configure RE 450 EU except the WPS method and face this issue of not getting the 5 GHz band between RE 450 and GPON G-2425G-A Router while according to the network map the clients (laptop and mobile) are able to connect to the RE 450 at both bands.

The details of the RE 450 (EU) are given in the last part of the message.

I also used the WiFi Signal tester on my mobile and it shows channel 36 selected from the GPON G-2425G-A router for WiFi Internet on my mobile.

I saw this issue being posted by some users at Flipkart who bought RE 450 (EU) – European model and am feeling sorry to ignore it which has resulted in hours of wastage of my time.

* Let me know what can be done without returning RE 450 EU and using the 5 GHz band channels from it on my laptop and mobile to have stronger signals and not have any packet drop at all.

Or, if I return it to Flipkart then which TP-Link WiFi Extender product should I buy that communicates with the GPON G-2425G-A router for the 5 GHz band without making any channel changes in it, which I cannot do (Channel 36 was automatically selected for communication in my mobile as written earlier)?

* Also, I checked the download speed at my laptop directly without using TPLink RE450 and using TPLink RE 450, 2.4 GHz band, and found that the speed as reported by speedtest.net remains the same then What is the point of using AC 1750 Extender when it is not making signals strength stronger to give more download speed?

* On the AC1750 Extender box, it is printed in white big size capital letters "WORKS WITH ANY WI-FI ROUTER" which is clearly wrong as it is not working with Nokia GPON G-2425G-A Router. Am I right or wrong?

I made * for my questions that need to be answered.

Thanks,

Rajesh Kumar Mago,

Hi, Could you please help me check the following details:

1. Please confirm the 5Ghz SSID is not hidden, then restart the router once. (If possible, please check on your smartphone Wi-Fi signal tester again to see whether the channel has been changed to another one this time.)

2. During the configuration, if not the 5GHz of Nokia GPON G-2425G-A, are you able to detect other 5Ghz networks?

And I see there is a new firmware for RE450 V4:

RE450(EU)_V4_1.0.20 Build 230213

It is also suggested to install the latest firmware first.

Having a range extender is mainly to extend the coverage and improve the wireless stability. A Wi-Fi extender adds a wireless “hop” toward the router, and the process of a packet going through the extra wireless extender/wireless transition adds a small delay. So the range extender would not help to improve the download speed.

Thank you very much.

Best regards.

  @David-TP

Hi David,

Thanks for your quick replies which haven't solved the issue of myself not getting 5GHz connectivity from TP-Link RE450 EU.

Replies:

i). SSID on GPON G-2425G-A Router is not hidden and the screenshot shows the same.

If it was hidden then how come my laptop and mobile were able to work on 5 GHz using the same band from the same GPON router which I already mentioned?

ii). On using 5GHz Scanner from TPLink RE 450EU, it shows other networks but not the one I need: JOON's_5GHz, and the same is shown in the screenshot which shows one page though I checked all three pages.

ii). I did the firmware upgrade of TPLink RE450 EU from the Firmware Upgrade option available in System Tools and the problem of it not detecting the 5GHz band from the GPON G-2425G-A router is still there.

I don't understand the logic of spending Rs.3,999 for TP-Link RE450 EU if it doesn't improve the download speed at all even at 2.4Ghz and was able to download at only 1.5 MBps and upload too at the same speed. Yes, the connection isn't dropping as observed in the last one day but it was less in the case of direct connection without TP-Link RE450EU which doesn't detect the 5GHz band from GPON Router which my laptop and mobile do.

I have decided to return RE450EU as it is not detecting 5GHz from GPON Router and thus TPLink's claim that it works with any WiFi Router is false. Also, there is a vast speed difference if I don't get a 5Ghz band through TP-Link RE450 because, on my DELL E3450 laptop, I am getting about 5-10 MBps download (about three times more compared to using TPLink RE450 EU) and upload speed depending on the time (more at night time).

Thanks, BTW for your efforts.

Regards,

Rajesh

P.S.: I am not able to post more than one pic so am not able to upload the rest from here as mentioned above because I wasn't knowing this limitation of only allowing one pic which is strange on a technical troubleshooting place that requires more than one pic usually from the user end.

  @rkmonline

Thank you very much for the further information and pictures.

I have hidden my home Wi-Fi and since all my devices were connected before, they could still see this wifi under the available wifi list. Anyway, thanks a lot for taking the time to confirm it for me. I am sorry that I can not explain why RE450 could not detect Nokia GPON Router G-2425G-A 5Ghz so far. The case has been reported to the engineers and I will also check whether there will be a similar case later. Before sending back the RE450 and if you ever changed your mind and would like to further troubleshoot with us, you are always welcome to send an email to support.forum@tp-link.com.

As for the speed issue, take your RE450 for example, currently, It connects to  Nokia via 2.4ghz Backhaul, then split into its own 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz networks. After that, clients would pick one to connect for an internet connection. Compared with devices connecting directly to Nokia via 2.4 GHz, there is more speed loss via RE450. Let's suppose that RE450 did connect to Nokia via both 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz backhaul, for a device that was too far away to catch the Nokia 5Ghz and could barely hold a connection to 2.4Ghz, with RE450 installed, it could be able to get 5Ghz from RE450 and get a decent speed. So in this situation, It indeed improves the download speed.

Best regards.
