Model: Deco E4
Hardware Version: V1
Firmware Version: V1_1.5.1_210330
Hi everyone. I have a doubt about the functioning of the Deco mesh system. I have two Deco E4, the main one connected via ethernet to a switch. The second connected to the main with wifi connection (wireless backhaul). Do I lose mesh functionality when using them in access point mode? What limitations do I have in using AP mode? Do I just lose router functions or do I lose all mesh functions as well?
Is the seamless roaming functionality lost in the access point?

Thanks

You will not lose WiFi mesh functionality and seamless roaming with Deco running in Access Point mode. As for other limitations, see this document: What’s the difference between Access Point mode and Router mode on the Deco?

Thanks for the reply.
Then "seamless roaming" is the same thing as fast roaming?

Not exactly, but they both are part of standard WiFi mesh roaming experience. I have this TP-Link document for you:  Get to Know Fast Roaming / Seamless Roaming on a Deco System

The document is a bit long and quite technical, so here is non-technical explanation.

Suppose you stream 4K movie on a tablet while walking through your house with tablet connected to WiFi mesh.

"Seamless roaming" promises movie will not be interrupted while tablet switches between WiFi nodes. Movie quality might briefly drop to HD, but streaming will not be interrupted.

"Fast roaming" promises that movie quality will stay at 4K all the time you move around the house covered by WiFi mesh.

You can't have fast without seamless. "Seamless roaming" comes first, "fast roaming" makes it faster.:)
