The main Powerline socket is plugged in on the dowstairs ringmain next to the router and the second is to be plugged in the loft where it wil not work! if i plug in upstairs it links straight away....... the loft is an extension of the upstairs ringmain so it should work as it works when it i plugged in upstairs.

Can anyone assist with this?

Thanks Tom

Please check if powerline LED turns on when you plug the second one in the loft, if possible, try different wall sockets.

Or for testing purpose, you could also try plugging first one upstairs and second one in the loft to see if they will be paired
