Model: TL-WA850RE
Hardware Version: V2
Firmware Version: original

I want a Guest network with unique network name and login, something that can then be directed to a "Captive Portal". I want better security and not allow guests direct access to my router. I unpacked my trusty old tplink extender from 2016 and set it up. The "Home" network is extended as "Home_EXT" but the password is the same for both router and extender. So I went cross-eyed looking for the "Guest Network" section in the web based interface & it's not there. OK I can switch it to access point mode, that allows a unique password, but then I need to plug it in by ethernet cable and lose the extended distance.

1) Will upgrading the Firmware add the guest network option in extender mode?

2) Must I be in Access Point Mode?

I would add a guest network at the source route but I can't find that option either. Thanks

You can easily upgrade the RE to its latest FW release - here.

I doubt that guest network is implemented in its RE mode.

If you use the RE in AP mode you'll get better connection speed and reliability.
