I'm trying to configure port forwarding to allow a single external IP to access a single IP:port on my local network. Isn't this possible with Archer AX23?

No, that's not possible. When port forward in a  TP-Link home routers it will allow access to this port from any external source.

@terziyski thank you for the answer.

I'm actually quite surprised. These are marketed as home/office routers; why would a home/office user open a LAN port to the whole world? A pretty bad decision by the company.

I better try installing OpenWRT; hope it doesn't brick the unit. My local consumer protection laws do not allow me to return the router (only allowed for online purchases).

OpenWRT may work for you if it's applicable for AX23 but it will void your warranty.

Here are the routers that could do this job for you - ER605 in your case will suffice.

Yes it seems OpenWRT is applicable: https://openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/archer_ax23_v1

Thanks for your ER605 suggestion but I'm not a business user. I think a 2.5 or 10 Gbit router would be much more better investment as of 2024 for a business buyer.

All I was looking for is a decent WiFi6 router from a reliable company that will publish firmware updates when security bugs are found. Limiting such a simple port forwarding feature is a pretty wrong decision both marketing and security wise.
